The sophomore has 5.5 sacks, while gamering 8.5 tackles for losses. He has been the biggest surprise on the defense this sea son. It was expected that defensive tackles Igor Olshansky and Haloti Ngata would be the main focus of opponents when it came to blocking assign ments, but when the latter went down with an injury against Mississippi State, all of that changed. Long has come on like gang busters since the game against the Bull dogs. With defensive end Quinn Dorsey providing more support for the defensive line, some focus has been taken away from Long. How ever, that should play into his hands when the game rolls around to the fourth quarter. Against the Cardinal, Long could have a career / day lining up across from an offense that has been dis oriented of late. If redshirt freshman Trent Edwards starts at quarterback for Stanford, Long will have a chance to pressure him more easily. If senior Chris Lewis starts behind center, it could be a longer day fo Long — but one that won't leave him out in the cold. dis Devan Long sophomore defensive end Anacortes, Wash. 6'4", 258 lbs. cta virnp n o i ai\ rurvu CARDINAL There's no doubt the Oregon offense is a sleeping giant set to wake up at any minute. With Stanford's defense ranked eighth in the Pacific-10 Conference, the possibility that the Ducks could light up the scoreboard is a reality The Cardinal ranks ninth in the Pac-10 in pass defense — the only team in the con ference that ranked higher than Oregon in the category — and give up an aver age of 281.2 yards per game in the air. That's where players like strong safety Timi Wusu come in. The sopho more has played very little this season — he sits at third on the Cardinal depth chart — but could quickly see action Saturday. Freshmen Trevor Hooper and Brandon Harrison have both con tributed to the lack of stopping power the Stanford de fense has shown this season. The _ Oregon receivers have speed, which will be valuable against a tall Stanford secondary. Only one play er on the team's two-deep list in the secondary, soph omore cornerback T.J.
