In fact, it was a finish many teams wish they could have. But this is Oregon, one of the biggest Meccas for running. It wasn't a finish that a team with three All American runners celebrates. The Oregon men's cross country team traveled to the 2003 Pre-NCAA Invitational and finished seventh overall. The Pre-NCAA Invitational featured 14 teams ranked in the top 30 or that received votes in the latest cross country poll. The Ducks were among 176 men's and women's teams that competed on the same course where the Nation al Championship race will be held. Northern Iowa hosted the meet at the Irv Memorial Golf Course in Water loo, Iowa. No. 7 Oregon finished seventh in its 35-team race, behind winners No. 5 Colorado, No. 3 Northern Arizona, No. 11 Ohio State, No. 14 George town, No. 19 Arizona and No. 21 N.C. State. There were three separate races for both the men's and women's events. Oregon did not face Pacific-10 Con ference foe Stanford, which entered the purple' race ranked No. 1 in the Na tion. Stanford easily won its race. BYU's Kip Kangogo (23 minutes, 10 seconds) posted the top time of the day. The Ducks were led by their All American trio of Eric Logsdon, Ryan Andrus and Brett Holts. Logsdon was the fastest Duck on the day, finishing 21st overall (24:05), followed by An drus at 24th (24:09) and Holts at 39th overall (24:25). Oregon also received a strong debut from freshman Patrick Werhane when he finished 94th overall (25:00). It was Werhane's first varsity race after the freshman finished second on the team's "b" squad in Oregon's season opener in Portland in September. The race also marked Logsdon's first as a top finisher for the Ducks. Also in the mix this weekend for the Ducks were seniors Magdalena Sandoval and Eri Macdonald. Sandoval won her third consecutive race of the season. She had finished her last two races after being edged out of the lead by professional runner Margaret Butler of Kajaks Track Club. Sandoval and Macdonald compet ed in the "open race" as the only rep resentatives of the Oregon women's team. Sandoval won her race by a 40-sec ond margin, ahead of N.C. State's Kara Price. It was Sandoval's first col legiate victory. When compared to all the other times completed by runners, San doval had the 20th-fastest time among 537 women harriers. It was a promising finish for Sandoval, con sidering the field included seven top 10 teams, 18 top-25 teams and 28 teams receiving votes in the most re cent poll. Individually, returning NCAA champion Shalane Flanagan of North Carolina won the purple race by 32 seconds. She finished the race at a time of 19:30. The No. 1 BYU women won the team title with 86 points, ahead of No. 11 North Carolina and No. 5 Notre Dame. Scott Archer is a freelance sports reporter for the Emerald. TENNIS continued from page 7 On the doubles side, two Oregon teams — Spencer and Swinnen, Bieri and Kost — advanced into the quar terfinals after winning their first two round matches. The Ducks have not seen this type of success from two players and two teams in the same tournament for a while. "(The tournament) reinforces what our guys have been working on," Rus sell said. "These kind of opportunities are what we want to capitalize on when playing in a tournament like this at home." The doubles finals will be held today at noon at the Student Tennis Center. Tim Bobosky Photographer Chris King and the Ducks were not able to reach the final round of singles play over the weekend at the ITA Regionals in Eugene. BASKETBALL continued from page 7 lot of different combinations." Kraayeveld and senior Kayla Steen lead the team in their final year, while Bills and juniors Kedzie Gunderson have two years of Pacific-10 Confer ence experience Three players — Ganes, junior Brandi Davis and sophomore Yadili Okwumabua — each have a year of varsity experience with Oregon. Ganes and Davis are the returning co-leaders in scoring from Oregon's 2002-03 campaign. Included with the seven new play ers are two who spent last season as redshirts after transferring. Point guard Corrie Mizusawa spent two years at St. Mary's (Calif.) before making the move to Eugene. She will take on starting duties as point guard. Chelsea Wagner is also ready to play after a redshirt year with the Ducks. The Springfield native spent her freshman season at Hawaii before transferring to Oregon to be closer to home. Five freshmen also join the team, including Canadian Kaela Chapde laine and Australian Eleanor Har ing. The two double the number of non-United States players on Ore gon's roster, but the former is ex pected to be out for the season with an ankle injury. The three freshman from the West Coast spent the summer in Eugene, taking classes and working out with their new teammates. Cicely Oaks, a graduate of Port land's Grant High School, led the state in scoring as a senior, playing in the same high school conference as Shetters. The third freshman, Ashley Allen, made the trek from California for the summer. Most of the returning players also stayed in Eugene, which helped them stay in the groove of school and build a chemistry among the players. "As a whole we get along really well on and off the court which I think is important," Kraayeveld said. "It's good to like each other on the court but also to go off the court and be able to hang out together and just like each other as people and not just as basketball players." The players talked a lot about their chemistry during Friday's me dia event, making the point that chemistry is an important part of their program. "I'm really excited," Ganes said. "We've got a great group of girls com ing in and everybody's having fun to gether. We're ready to go." Contact the senior sports reporter at mindirice@dailyemerald.com.
