"I told him to play your game and don't try to do anything special, and he did some positive things. Trent is still the No. 1 guy right now." In the red and yellow lohn David Booty has pushed the competition aside and now sits at No. 2 on the L1SC quarterbacks chart. The freshman enrolled early this year — he should be a senior at Evan gel Christian High School in Louisiana. According to the USC Web site, he is believed to be the first prep football player to enroll at a major Division I university after graduating from high school early. He made his collegiate debut against the Cardinals, completing one pass in four attempts. "lohn David Booty is a really good football player," USC head coach Pete Carroll said. "If Matt (Leinart) was to falter or get nicked, he'd go in. Some where down the stretch, he may have to make some big plays for us. 1 have no doubt that he'll do it, too." What rankings? The Associated Press Top 25 poll and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll both came out on Sunday. Each poll's rankings tell something about the Pac-10: The conference has parity and lots of it. USC remains the highest ranked team in the Pac-10. The Trojans sit at fifth in the AP, and fourth in the coaches poll. Washington State is next at sixth in both polls. Finally, Oregon State, despite not playing last week, is ranked 22nd in the AP poll and 21 st in the coaches poll. UCLA, Washington State, and UCLA remain the only team with spotless conference records — all at 2-0 — and USC (2-1) is the only oth er team with a winning Pac-10 record. Byes... nonconference In addition to Oregon, Arizona has a bye this week. Arizona State plays North Carolina and USC takes on Notre Dame. The rest of the conference plays Pac-10 tilts. That is, they don't do very well in this quest, and everything goes back to the drawing board. The Pac-10 has become so profi cient offensively that the best defense against a good offense is even more offense. Cornerbacks are hung out to dry as quarterbacks have their way. Pac-10 teams seem to understand that leaving cornerbacks unassisted is inefficient, but they still can't apply that to games. One team has scored at least 40 points in 20 games this season where a Pac-10 program was in volved. Furthering that, six games have ended with one team posting more than 50 points. Maybe, though, having an offen sive-loaded conference isn't that bad after all. But ifyou like that, just don't expea to play anywhere but the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day. UCLA dominating the Pac-10 For the second straight week, UCIA holds down the No. 3 position in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/ Adidas national poll. Only North Carolina and Notre Dame, which both have five more wins than the Bruins, are ranked higher. The Bruins came off a double over time victory against Washington on Saturday to move to 9-1 -2 overall and 1 -0 in conference play. Just a week be fore, UCLA scored with three seconds left in regulation to defeat UNLV, 1 -0. Huskies hanging around Want proof that the Pac-10 is one of the strongest conferences in soc cer? Washington still holds down the No. 10 ranking in this week's poll with a 7-3-3 record, dlie Huskies have the fewest wins and most losses of anybody ranked in the top 15. The Huskies did suffer at the hands of the Bruins last weekend in a 3-2 double overtime loss. Washington can still make claim as the best statistical team in the Pac-10, leading the con ference in shots, points, assists, assists per game and shutouts, as of Oct. 7. Washington looks for its first con ference win this weekend when Ore gon and Oregon State travel north to play in Seattle. ASU: Shutout queens While holding down the No. 23 national ranking, Arizona State comes off a solid weekend by defeat ing Cal, 3-2, and Stanford, 1-0. The Sun Devils are tied for the con ference lead with six shutouts this season after having their way with Stanford this weekend. It was also the first time in school history that Ari zona State swept the California-Stan ford series. Arizona State moves to 8-2-2 over all and 2-0 in conference play before heading to Tucson this weekend to face in-state rival Arizona. Contact the sports reporter at jessethomas@dailyemerald.com.
