"We have a lot to prove to our selves," Lainez said. "We have put so much time and effort into preparing for the season. We definitely expea to see results this year." In 2002, the Ducks finished 1-7-1 in conference play, with the only vic tory coming over Arizona at home. And even though the Ducks finished just above .500 in the preseason this year, they feel this is their chance to start over. "The kids are ready for a second season to begin," Oregon head coach Bill Steffen said. Steffen also stressed the importance for his players to remain as focused as possible and not get too excited about it being the Civil War. But as expeaed, the pressure is mounting. "rhere's a lot of excitement," Lainez said. "I'm sure when we start, it's just going to be a battle out there. It's go ing to be all emotion. It is the most important game of our season so far." Overall, Sacramento grabbed 59 re bounds, including 23 on the offensive board. Portland, meanwhile, came up with just 35 total rebounds. Zach Ran dolph was able to grab eight, but no other Blazer had more than four. "I don't think we played very well tonight," Cheeks said. "The big lineup that we had out on the floor was not conducive for us. I talked about it before, about the lineup against Sacramento. That's what the preseason is for. It tells you what you can and can't do, particu larly against a team like Sacramento. It is a very good basketball team ." Sacramento grabbed a four-point lead at the end of the first quarter, but failed to keep Portland at bay early on in the second. The Trail Blazers got with in one, 34-33, when Qyntel Woods sank the second of two free throws. Portland caught up two minutes later, and the teams would trade points heading into halftime. "With the lineup that we started with, it's not easy to get out and run," Cheeks said of the game's up-tempo pace. "They are more accustomed to it And they were without (Chris) Webber, who is a big part of their team. That's what they do. They get up down the floor, they push the ball, they move. They got a lot of points at the foul line. * More specifically, the Kings posted 28 points from the charity stripe. They did, however, shoot 42 times from the foul line. Webber didn't play for the Kings. She's a psychologist and I think that's been really helpful to me, being able to get counseling. "Last year was the hardest year of my life. 1 almost didn't make it to my sophomore year. I almost quit, but I'm glad I didn't." After experiencing a sour end to her freshman year, Russell was deter mined to make the best of her sopho more campaign. Being the only re turning middle blocker on a team with nine freshmen, Russell has ac quired a new role, which is foreign to most sophomores: Being a leader. "It's weird because I'm basically the same age as (the freshmen), I just have more experience," Russell said. "Last year, Lindsay Closs was a big help to me. I thought, when I'm her age, that's how I'm going to be with the younger girls." So far it's working just fine. "She's been absolutely amazing," freshman middle blocker Kristen Bit ter said. "I look up to Kelly for all my examples. She helps me out in prac tice every day. She's kind of my men tor for middle blocking." Entering tonight's match against Washington State at McArthur Court, Russell leads the Ducks in kills, hitting percentage and points per game. But more important than excelling on the court is that Russell is enjoying herself this year. Whether it's going for a drive through the mountains in her 1996 Subaru Im preza, making a late night run to Taco Bell or hanging out with close friend Jaclyn Jones, Russell is enjoy ing her life as a college student.
