The No. 49 Oregon women’s
tennis team swept three matches
at home this weekend to improve
to 6-1 on the season while the No.
72 men dominated Portland 7-0,
their third-straight victory.
The women, working on a three
game winning streak of their own
heading into the weekend, beat No.
75 Sacramento St., 7-0 with strong
doubles play and a three-set thriller
between Duck sophomore No. 28
Daria Panova and No. 51 Margarita
Karnaukhova. Panova took the
match 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
Saturday, the Ducks handled
the Pacific Tigers 6-1 by winning
all three doubles matches and five
of the six singles bouts.
The men competed in the

Portland, but it was not as easy as
the shutout indicates.
“We were tested (by Portland),”
head coach Chris Russell said. “It
was tough, but I’m really happy
with the way our guys played.”
Ducks Oded Teig and Sven
Swinnen beat the doubles team of
Quinn Borchard and Peter
Malacek, 8-4, to add No. 55 to the
long list of ranked opponents they
have taken down this season.
In singles, No. 64 Manuel Kost
improved to 3-0 on the season and
freshmen Thomas Bieri and Arron
Spencer remained undefeated
with victories in three sets.
“Some of the guys lost some
first sets,” Russell said. “And it
forced them to buckle down and
focus on what they needed to do.”
Teig also won the 62nd match of
his career as he closes in on the
Oregon singles record of 65.
The women resumed play
Sunday morning and beat No. 73
California-Irvine, 6-1.
The Ducks rebounded from
losing the doubles point to take
all six singles matches, five in
straight sets.
“We were a little bit defensive in
the doubles today,” head coach
Nils Schyllander said. “We just
tried to really focus on making no
mistakes in the singles.”
In doubles, Panova and junior
Courtney Nagle lost to No. 60 Jenny
Bowman and Tiffany Chang 9-7, but
both got their revenge in singles.
Panova topped Bowman 6-4, 6-1
and Nagle ousted Chang 7-6, 6-2.
The women finished the week
end with a late match Sunday
night against Portland State. They
will travel to Arizona next week
end for conference matches
against Arizona and Arizona State.
The men will be at home against
No. 73 Boise State on Saturday.

The Oregon softball squad is off to
its best start since at least 1986, the
first year the Ducks started keeping
records — and the team has been
playing for less than two weeks.
The Ducks (8-1) went undefeated

Kontra, a sophomore, and Vid

second shutout of the season.
The Ducks immediately faced their
next challenge — No. 9 Florida State.
Freshman Duck pitcher Amy Harris
gave up one run in the first inning, but
held the Seminoles scoreless with the
help of Vidlund, who earned a save.
In the top of the seventh, Oregon
loaded the bases with three freshmen
for senior Alyssa Laux. Laux drove in

“We have a very resilient team right

hits when we need to and right now
we’re just outplaying teams. I’m very
pleased with our pitching and how
we’ve been playing defensively.”
