Tennis sweeps through weekend The men and women have success at home in a bevy of weekend matchups Tennis Ryan Heath Freelance Sports Reporter The No. 49 Oregon women’s tennis team swept three matches at home this weekend to improve to 6-1 on the season while the No. 72 men dominated Portland 7-0, their third-straight victory. The women, working on a three game winning streak of their own heading into the weekend, beat No. 75 Sacramento St., 7-0 with strong doubles play and a three-set thriller between Duck sophomore No. 28 Daria Panova and No. 51 Margarita Karnaukhova. Panova took the match 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Saturday, the Ducks handled the Pacific Tigers 6-1 by winning all three doubles matches and five of the six singles bouts. The men competed in the nightcap of Saturday’s tennis dou "We were tested (by Portland). It was tough, but I'm really happy with the way our guys played." In singles, No. 64 Manuel Kost improved to 3-0 on the season and freshmen Thomas Bieri and Arron Spencer remained undefeated with victories in three sets. “Some of the guys lost some first sets,” Russell said. “And it forced them to buckle down and focus on what they needed to do.” Teig also won the 62nd match of his career as he closes in on the Oregon singles record of 65. The women resumed play Sunday morning and beat No. 73 California-Irvine, 6-1. The Ducks rebounded from losing the doubles point to take all six singles matches, five in straight sets. “We were a little bit defensive in the doubles today,” head coach Nils Schyllander said. “We just tried to really focus on making no mistakes in the singles.” In doubles, Panova and junior Courtney Nagle lost to No. 60 Jenny Bowman and Tiffany Chang 9-7, but both got their revenge in singles. Panova topped Bowman 6-4, 6-1 and Nagle ousted Chang 7-6, 6-2. The women finished the week end with a late match Sunday night against Portland State. They will travel to Arizona next week end for conference matches against Arizona and Arizona State. The men will be at home against No. 73 Boise State on Saturday. The Ducks (8-1) went undefeated in this weekend’s Seminole Classic, winning the tournament and beating two ranked teams. In the top of the seventh, Oregon loaded the bases with three freshmen for senior Alyssa Laux. Laux drove in two runs and Oregon held on to win 3-1. Saturday, Oregon began the day I against another ranked team — No. 17 Georgia. After an early 2-0 lead by Oregon, Georgia tied the game in the sixth. Harris came in to pitch, holding Geor gia scoreless for the rest of the game. Senior Lynsey Haij drove in Laux for the winning run — in the bottom of the 12th inning. The game lasted 4 hours and 15 minutes. Oregon played Florida A&M to close the tournament, winning 11-4. Junior Jenn Poore and sophomore Mari Lyn Petrick each had two RBIs against Florida A&M. Petrick, Haij, senior Rachel Tommasini and fresh men Danielle Baird and Breanne Sabol each scored twice. “We have a very resilient team right now,” Arendsen said. “We’re getting hits when we need to and right now we’re just outplaying teams.
