Fall 2002 Events uet ready to roll! Practice your skills in a warm, supportive environment. The Outdoor Program has reserved pool space at Gerlinger Pool on the UO Cam pus for five skill builder sessions. An OP staff person will be on hand to offer informal tips but instruction is not provided. A small pool means that space will fill quickly. Reserve your spot by prepaying at the OP Office. Pool Ses sion: $3 UO students and OP Co-op members, $5 general admission, OP Kayak Rental $5 (first-come basis). Wednesdays, 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm: Gerlinger Pool Welcome to the Outdoor Program! Come to a casual gathering with a thrilling slide show and introduction to the OP resources and philosophy. Come meet interesting people who share your love of the outdoors and start planning your next adventure. Everyone welcome! Thursday, 7:30 pm: Outdoor Program Rock Climbing 101 Clinic Saturday, October 12 The OP and the Outdoor Pursuits Program (OPP) are once again teaming up to bring you a fun day of rock climbing technique instruction. The OPP climbing instructor has tailored this clinic to beginner and intermediate climbers who want to focus on their footwork and place their hands effectively, in a fun and supportive atmosphere. The clinic will not cover the how to’s of belay and anchor setting; instead, we’ll take the entire day to focus on technique. The clinic provides 4 hours of instruction and costs $3 for students and OP Co-op members, $5 general public. SRC rock shoes, harnesses, and belay devices can be rented for $3. Registration is limited to 10 participants. Preregister at the OP Office. Saturday, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm Skinner’s Butte Climbing Columns Thursday and Saturday, October 17 and 19 Become an OP trip initiator: it’s easy. The first night covers OP philosophy, liability, trip planning, and procedures. Saturday we’ll go over the use of the equipment facility (The Bam), the gear, vehicles, safety procedures, and more. Attendance at both sessions is required to become a trip initiator. Free! Thursday, 7:30 pm: Outdoor Program Saturday, 9:30 am: OP Barn Thursday, October 24 In the winter of 2001, David Anderson and Ant Chapin planned a winter expe dition despite US State Department warnings not to travel in Nepal. Forced to change their objectives due to terrorist attacks by Maoist insurgents, the two successfully climbed Kwangde Lo and Lobuche East in the Kumbu Mountain Range. While traveling in Nepal, David was struck by the people and their struggle to gain political, social, and economic stability. David will come to the UO to share his adventure; his slide presentation describes the history of the region, the affect of foreign tourism on the environment, and shows the stunning mountain scenery of the Himalayas. Free to UO students and OP Co op members; $2 general admission. Thursday, 7:30 pm: 110 Willamette Hall [fall Interpretive Series Birds: Friday and Saturday, November 1 and 2 Trees: Saturday, November 9 mushrooms: Friday and Saturday, November 15 and 16 The OP and UO Natural History Museum join forces again to bring you the fall interpretive series. Local specialists share their knowledge to heighten your outdoor experiences! All weekend field trips depart from the UO Natu ral History Museum (near the comer of 15th & Agate). Preregister and pay for all clinics at the OP office. Birds: UO field ornithology instructor and local bird guide author, Dan Gleason, will provide an evening presentation on “Winter Birds of the Willamette Val ley” and take us to the field to observe and identify winter birds. $4. Fri, Nov 1,7:30-9:00 pm, 110 Willamette and Sat, Nov 2,9:00 am -12:00 pm, UO Natural History Museum Trees: Expert arborist “Whitie” Lueck will lead this tour of campus trees. Free! Sat, Nov 9,9:00 am-12:00 pm, UO Natural History Museum Mushrooms: The OP’s own fungus fanatic, Ed Fredette, will lead this trip to local forests, in search of Eugene’s best mushrooms. $4. Fri, 7:30-9:00 pm, Outdoor Program and Sat, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm, UO Natural History Museum Tuesday, nouember 5 Buy, sell, trade, and socialize! You’ll find rain gear, ski/board equipment, hik ing boots, kayaks, sleeping bags, tents, and maybe even a backpacker’s espresso maker and much more! Anything goes at this humming outdoor equipment flea market. An amazing variety of gear will change hands at garage sale prices. Limited table space is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Private sell ers only please. Parking provided in the EMU visitor’s parking lot. Don’t miss this great event. FREE!! Tuesday 7:30 pm: EMU Ballroom Wednesday, nouember 13 War, sickness, romance, crime, adventure! While UN troop trucks and tanks rolled along Bosnia’s highways, Willie Weir cycled into Sarajevo and beyond into Serb controlled Bosnia. From the mountains of Slovenia, to the back roads of Albania, Willie encountered this volatile region and a woman who would change his life forever. The OP is thrilled to welcome Willie Weir back for his third performance and slide presentation here at UO. If you haven’t had a chance to see him don’t miss this one; skillful story tellers are hard to find and Willie is one of the finest! Free to UO students and OP Co-op members, $2 general admission. Wednesday, 7:30 pm: 100 Willamette Hall Tuesday, nouember 19 In a full burial avalanche incident, only immediate and effective search and rescue by companions offers real chance of survival. An avalanche beacon, used properly, can be a powerful tool for rescue. This clinic will cover the basics of avalanche rescue procedures, including hands-on use of transceivers that are available for use through the OP’s Allard and Casey Memorial Safety Library (for details see page 3). Free.
