From an early age, Strickland learned the importance of schol arship and had the encourage ment he needed to pursue his goals. And now, Strickland works to guide others. “There’s no question I give peo ple advice,” he said. “My mother says if I was as good at knowing what I should do as I am at telling other people what they should do, we’d all be a better off. “So I may be a bit bossy.” But everyone has their own style, and Strickland’s colleagues said the University was fortunate to be under his direction. “Rennard did an outstanding job,” presiding law school Dean Laird Kirkpatrick said. “He fin ished the fundraising for the new building and helped get the law school moved into one of the most beautiful and technological ly advanced law buildings in the country. ” And despite being blissfully boastful when asked about his ac complishments, which include writing and editing a federal hand book many consider the definitive reference on American Indian law, Strickland tends to spend a majori ty of his time quietly operating outside the limelight. “He’s a relatively low-key per son who works quietly but direct ly on trying to get things done,” O’Fallon said. Perhaps that is because Strick land has always known academia was his niche. His contributions across the nation are many, yet Strickland has the uncanny ability to know when to let go. “I really believe it’s important that leadership have vitality,” he - said of his departure as dean. But no matter what endeavor Strickland takes on, he always has his trusty sidekick — law — on his side. “I really enjoy the law and par ticularly the way in which the law works itself out in the lives of indi viduals,” he said. And, certainly, it has worked out marvelously for him and for those he touches. “I think if you’re a good teacher,” Strickland said, “you en courage students to reach deep into themselves and find what is there.” Contact the sports editor at bradschmidt@dailyemerald.com.
