Call 346-37 COMMENTARY Tom Daschle should learn logical forest management Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle’s, D-S.D., sneak attach ment —to a critical funding bill —exempting South Dakota’s forest lands from all environmental regu lation and lawsuits reveals much more than home state pork for a sen ator in power. Daschle’s statement that logging is “the fastest and most effective way to get the forest thinned” and therefore hold forest fire danger to a minimum is the most dramatic high-level acknowledgment to date that the environmental extremists’ “no harvest” positions are just not logical forest management. (See Washington Times article at http://www. washtimes.com/na tional/20020724-662627.htm). Other than a volcanic eruption such as Mount St. Helens, a hot for Today’s crossword solution Guest Commentary Liz VanLeeuwen est fire is the most environmentally destructive event known. Not only are plant and animal life and fish habitats completely destroyed, but the soil organic matter and structure are destroyed—leaving the bare soil to erode and choke waterways. According to a July 22 Washing ton Times story, forest fires this summer have burned 3.5 million, acres of forests to date. This equals a stretch of forest nearly 20 miles wide clear across Oregon from north to south, and the most de structive fires may yet be on the way. Some of the largest were caused by human carelessness, but most are caused by lightning. While dry weather and lightning are not subject to control, common sense forest management practiced by private timber and logging com panies in the past kept fire spread limited. Now, because, in Oregon an estimated 70 percent of the logging. companies are out of business along with their firefighting equipment and experienced crews, and with federal and state forest land manage ment being restricted because of faulty public environmental percep tions, and with large areas of dead, unharvested beetle-killed stands, and reduction in access roads, Ore gon is truly susceptible to a cata strophic fire season. Rep. J. D. Hayworth, R-Ariz., where more than 500,000 acres have been destroyed by fire, is quoted in this Washington Times story as saying they are trying to re bound from the worst fires in our history. Hundreds of homes, thou sands of lives shattered! The price, unfortunately, is being paid by Oregonians too. Sunday, July 28, at Gold Beach, we could see the ominous white vapor cloud ris ing above the smoke from the Illinois Valley fires approaching the town of Agnes. A former U.S. Forest Service firefighter told us there were no fire fighters stationed—or available —between the fires in Agnes and Gold Beach. He was seriously con cerned. An east wind already put Brookings in smoke and soot. If this summer’s fires and Sen. Daschle’s unexpected common sense response result in realistic changes for all states in the endan gered species act and a reduction in faulty environmental hype, there may yet be some long-term gain from the fires, but what a price to pay!!! Former State Rep. Liz VanLeeuwen served for 18 years in the Oregon Legislature and is running for U.S. Congress from Oregon’s 4th District, a seat currently held by Rep. Peter DeFazio. universiTY COMMONS apaRTmenTS 90 CoMmoNs DRive EuGenE, OR 97401 FuRNisHed 1, 2 & 4 BeDRoom ApanmeNts wiTh WasHeR & Drycr 014395 • CLubHousE w/GaMe Room • Deckcd out kiTCHeNS • FiTNess CEnTEr • CAbLe/lNteRNeT HooKUps • AMPle REsiDEnT and VisiTor PArKinG • EMerGeNCY AIatm Buttons • SwiMMinG Pool • iNdividuAl LeASEs • LiGHtEd VoLLeyBaLL & BASKetBaLL CouRts • RooMMaTe MaTCHinG SERvicE • OuTdooR Gas GriLLs & BBQ • On Bus RoUTe to CAMpus 4 BeorooM, 2 bAtH stArriNg aT $325 2 bEdRooM, 2 BaTh sTaRtinG At $395
