Triple majors continued from page 1A While being a full-time student, Flores has juggled her coursework with a part-time tutoring job and weekend visits to her husband in Salem. She said she chose this de gree combination because her hus band is a Spanish speaker, and she thinks the combination of two lan guages and linguistics — the study of languages — will help her reach her goal of being an English as a second language teacher to adults. Despite the challenge of taking on an extra major or two, some ad visers recommend that path for stu dents interested in several related fields and who are willing to spend a little extra time in the classrooms. “It's definitely a heavy load as a student,” Flores’ Spanish adviser Luis Verano said. “But I recom mend to consider it if topics are in terrelated.” He found most of the triple majors he encounters are already aware of their requirements, and just have to get used to being busy and staying on top of their classwork. For students uncertain of what ca reer venue to pursue, Flores suggests they attend a school with lots of mul ticultural options and take a variety of classes until they find the perfect fit. “When you find something you like, study it,” she said. Flores isn’t done with school yet. Next, she plans to earn her master’s degree in linguistics from Portland State University. For her, the biggest hurdle to jump in her college career has been trying to understand teach ers' expectations. "It's sometimes just not clear what they're looking for," she said. Although Flores said her father and husband were instrumental in keeping her going, she said her real spark to reach her goal had to come from within.
