Hearings continued from page 1 most Republicans, especially in the House of Representatives, where they are in control. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D S.D., who favors such an independent com mission, heard growing objections from his fellow Democrats as they discussed the idea behind closed doors at their weekly lunch. Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., said some Sen ate Democrats fear pushing for the controver sial commission in light of Bush’s stern op position, the likely refusal of the House to go along, and thus the probable futility of stick ing their necks out politically for an idea doomed to fail. “There are many who feel the Intelligence Committee should be given its opportunity,” Durbin said. “And others who feel an inde pendent commission is necessary. Some weren’t sure what the composition should be. I’d be surprised if Senator Daschle got a clear message out of this one. Daschle put off a vote on whether to create an independent commission on intelligence lapses but said he expects a debate in the Sen ate “at some point in the future.” ©2002, Knight Ridder/Tribune Information Services. News brief Multicultural Center to offer food, movies, study break The University Bias Response Team is offer ing students a chance to take a break from studying today and Friday with free movies and snacks at noon in the Multicultural Center. On Wednesday, the BRT will show the 1989 movie “My Left Foot.” The Film tells the true story of Christy Brown, a man born with cere bral palsy who learned to paint and write with the one limb he could control — his left foot. Friday’s movie is “The Matthew Shepard Story,” a 2002 made-for-TV movie based on the true story of an openly gay college student who was murdered in 1998. Sub sandwiches, chips, cookies and soda will be provided. Assistant Dean of Diversity Programs Mark Tracy said the event is intended to “get the word out about the BRT,” an educational group that works with victims of bias, as well as the individuals and systems that perpetrate it. “We tried to pick movies that people could enjoy but that also brought up deeper issues we’re trying to bring out with the Bias Re sponse Team,” he said. On Monday, the BRT showed “Higher Learning,” a 1995 movie dealing with issues of racism on a university campus. — Kara Cogswell _ EMU Craft Center Summer Registration Starts Tomorrow !
