Brooklyn, Nair say goodbye ■ 2001 -02 ASUO President Nilda Brooklyn and Vice President Joy Nair are honored for their efforts By Danielle Gillespie Oregon Daily Emerald To share memories and express their appreciation, about 50 Uni versity students gathered at Ger linger Lounge on Monday to say farewell to ASUO President Nilda Brooklyn and Vice President Joy Nair, whose last day in office will be Friday. The event began with Office of Multicultural Affairs Director Carla Gary speaking about her apprecia tion for Brooklyn’s and Nair’s ef forts to improve student life at the University and offered words of ad vice for the incoming ASUO staff. “You have unlimited horizons, and you can decide what you want to do with them,” she said. “It does not matter where you come from, you are standing on the shoulders of those who brought you there. Tread carefully because your foot prints are indelible.” Following Gary’s speech, the audience watched a video featur ing short commentaries from stu dent group members, University administrators, Programs Finance Committee members, as well as ASUO student senators, secre taries and interns. Everyone expressed sentiments of appreciation for Brooklyn’s and Nair’s work in office and shared memories of times spent together. The most common memory shared was Nair’s boxing performance in the Interfraternity Council and Pan hellenic Council’s The Smoker, an amateur boxing charity event. After the video, ASUO Student Senate President Peter Watts spoke, thanking Brooklyn and Nair for their work in helping to revise the ASUO Clark Document and their efforts to eliminate the energy fee. Watts also told stories about time spent together. “I think we have had some good times, and I’ll miss you both,” he said. Brooklyn and Nair received a dozen roses and stood to thank the crowd for their kind words and for putting on the event. “I just really appreciate all of you for giving your love and your sup port,” Brooklyn said. Nair agreed and said she was glad to see so many people had benefited from their hard work. Incoming ASUO President Rachel Pilliod shared a few words about her memories of friendship while working with the two women as their campaign manager. “You have both taught me a lot about privilege and have been so supportive,” she said. “I thank you both and wish you the best of luck in the future.” Ten awards were given to student groups for hosting the best events on campus this academic year. The events were chosen based on a poll of student group members. To conclude the evening, incom ing ASUO staff members for the 2002-03 academic year were an nounced.
