University of Oregon Bookstore Board of Directors Candidates and Statements for your Bookstore Board Wednesday, May 8 and Thursday, May 9 In the Bookstore lobby and at the EMU 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Bring your current UO I.D. Meghan Madden The University of Oregon Bookstore is undergoing a transition. The opportunities for expansion and growth that it will face during the next few years will shape the direction of the store for future students, faculty, and staff. The possibilities are endless. The Board needs people with vision to guide this transition. As a member of the Bookstore Board of Directors, I will work to ensure that students’ needs are met in the most effective manner. By investing in opportunities today, we can save money for future students and ourselves and ensure that the Bookstore will be around for years to come. I will draw on my experiences working with a wide range of people and organizations, including the ASUO, Student Alumni Association, and Alpha Phi Omega, to utilize the strengths of each Board member. Please vote for Meghan Madden for the Bookstore Board of Directors. Ola Duzha Over the last several years the University of Oregon Bookstore has implemented great changes in their organization. With guidance from the Board of Directors they have advanced their standards, achieving a greater appeal to the University of Oregon students and the community. However, more development is clearly needed. The next few years will present major opportunities for the Bookstore. The increase in the University’s enrollment and the success of the athletic programs will bring in a larger and more diverse pool of customers. The Board of Directors has a great task ahead of itself in attempting to comply with the changing customer demand. They will need open-minded and visionary people to lead them through this challenge. I feel that the experience I have gained by working with a variety of student groups on campus such as the ASUO, Career Council, Peer Judicial Board, and others has provided me with the proper skills to lead the Bookstore in the right direction. As a business major, I will be able to draw from my classroom experiences to effectively allocate the Bookstore's budget. Make sure and vote for Ola Duzha for sophomore representative on the Bookstore’s Board of Directors. Emily Scriven I am excited to run as a sophomore candidate in the 2002 Bookstore Board Elections. Working with the board will give me the opportunity to learn more about the store as a business. I will critically look at the operations to ensure the student maximal benefits. For example, are the book or clothing prices the absolute lowest we can offer? This is a common concern students have expressed, and I would like to explore alternate possibilities. I feel I am capable of the responsibilities as your student representative. Not only will I take my work seriously, I am detail-oriented and will make sure the position is fulfilled to its most productive extent. As a licensed real estate agent, I have had the opportunity to learn many trades; the most significant being the ability to work in a group setting to achieve specific goals. I am excited to incorporate the students’ goals into those of the bookstores’ to ensure a positive outcome for all parties involved. Thank you for choosing Emily Scriven as your sophomore representative. Jessica Fernandez My name is Jessica Fernandez and I am running for the Sophomore position for the University of Oregon Bookstore Board of Directors. I became interested in this position upon learning that the Bookstore is a non-profit organization run primarily by students and independently from the University. This was important to me because, like most students, much of my money tends to wind up in the registers of the bookstore through course book sales, supplies, and even sportswear. Being a college student, money is not something that is available in abundance; therefore I hope not to be ripped of when purchasing necessities for my education. When attending the Board of Directors meeting I learned that our bookstore is ranked among the top stores in giving back to the students. These facts are something I felt that everyone should have knowledge of. So, in deciding to run I plan to seek out ways to let the average student know where their money is going without them having to attend a meeting. I also intend to support and uphold the ongoing efforts to make course book and school supply retail as affordable as possible. If elected, I’ll help make the changes that will benefit you. Jenifer Post My name is Jenifer Post and I am running for the student-at large position on the University of Oregon Bookstore Board. I am eager to voice the opinions and ideas of the University student body and staff on methods for improving and continuing the success of the Bookstore. I am especially interested in the position because it gives me the unique opportunity to be a part of an institution that is an integral part of the University’s culture. This experience would allow me to learn a great deal about how a successful business is run and how making calculated decisions about its future can help a business to maintain its competitive edge. One day I hope to run my own business and feel that my experience with the U of 0 Bookstore would be invaluable. Through volunteer work at hospitals and communities for developmental^ disabled individuals I have gained valuable listening skills and the ability to problem solve. This, in addition to my ability to work well with others and my sheer motivation to learn, will improve the Board’s ability to make changes within the bookstore so that it may better serve the needs of the student body and University faculty. Carrie Lacey-Krietz As a graduate student at the University of Oregon College of Education, I have learned the importance of commitment and hard work. These qualities not only pertain to my field of study, but to the University as a whole. I will use these skills to foster open communication between the University community and the Bookstore. This will be accomplished through focus groups, surveys, comment cards, and informative materials. With student enrollment at an all time high, I feel that it is now more important than ever that students are represented with a clear and powerful voice. Thank you for your vote and I look forward to representing you. Kerry Konrady No statement submitted Everyone is welcome to shop at all our locations, including our web Site at www.uobookstore.com. I have held this position for the past two years and look forward to continuing in this capacity. In my tenure, I have come to know the UO Bookstore, it’s managers, employees and customers as a progressive, responsible and diverse group of people. The fiscal success of the Bookstore is always passed on to the UO community and this human approach to business is among the greatest strengths of this small business. I am proud to play an important role within such a complex organization. In my next term, I hope to mentor new board members, especially the student representatives, to a new level of leadership and commitment. Currently, we lack some structural processes and procedures and I plan to implement a renewed focus on board development and teamwork. I believe we will all benefit from a more focused and educated Board of Directors. It is my goal to make a solid contribution to the Board, the Bookstore and the University community. If you believe in a progressive and human bookstore, vote for me and I will represent you well. Jennifer Creighton-Neiwert After having spent time at the University as both a student and a staff member, I have seen the University of Oregon Bookstore undergo many changes. The next few years will present opportunities for even more change and growth. The Board needs more members with vision and experience. I will work to ensure that the Bookstore meets the needs of both students and staff. In my position as the ASUO Accounting Coordinator, I deal with students and staff from across campus on a daily basis. My interactions with them will enable me to represent the diverse opinions and needs that exist within the campus community. I would enjoy the opportunity to use my skills and knowledge to add to the Bookstore Board of Directors. Vote for Jennifer Creighton Neiwert for the Classified/Officer of Administration position on the University of Oregon Bookstore Board of Directors. Shelley Sutherland When I first became a member of the Bookstore Board, I did so because I thought I could be helpful in implementing the newly developed long range plan. As a faculty representative, I thought the components of that plan were important to my colleagues. I thought it was essential to address the over-crowded facilities and to be responsive to the technological needs of both students and faculty. Tremendous improvements have been made in these and other areas. However, a transition phase still exists with much more to be done to make our Bookstore a truly first class facility. I want to continue to be a part of this progress. I have some goals that I desire to pursue. These include the assurance that our new and remodeled branches meet the needs of the users of these state-of-the-art facilities. I also want to provide both students and faculty with increased discounts and more convenient services. I want to provide faculty with a comfortable place to examine and choose curriculum materials. My experiences, my interest and my willingness to contribute to the continued progress of the Bookstore qualify me for another term. -
