The No. 37 Ducks played well at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships dur ing the weekend and now wait to see who they will face in the re gional round of the NCAA Tournament. Freshman Daria Panova, ranked No. 108 in the country, continued her im pressive play for Oregon by advancing to the quarterfinals of the Pac-10 Cham pionships in Ojai, Calif. Panova struggled early, but defeated No. 68 Mhairi Brown of Arizona State, 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 in the first round. She quickly disposed of Washington State’s Lorena Arias, 6-2, 6-2 in the second round. “It was a strong showing for her to day,” Oregon head coach Jack Griffin said Thursday after the matches. Panova lost 6-3, 7-5 to No. 7 Jewel Pe terson of USC in the quarterfinals. Peterson knocked off another Duck, No. 107 senior Janice Nyland, in the first round, 6-4,6-0. Senior Vickie Gun narsson and junior Monika Gieczys also lost first round matches for the Ducks in TENNIS the main draw. In the invitational draw, freshman Es ter Bak lost 6-1, 6-1 in the first round. Sophomore Courtney Nagle took Erin Hoe of Washington to a third set before losing, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Sophomore Davina Mendiburu beat Rio del Rosario of California, 6-3,6-2 for the only first round victory for Oregon in the invitational draw. She lost to Megan Yeats of Arizona State, 6-1, 6-4 in the second round. Nyland, Bak and Gunnarsson picked up consolation victories for the Ducks. The team will find out where they play next on Thursday, when the NCAA announces the field of 64. Stanford won the NCAA champi onship last season. The Ducks have been playing well since spring break, winning six out of seven matches, including wins over No. 49 Louisiana State, No. 34 Florida Inter national and No. 21 Washington. “It was a busy month for us and we were a little worn out,” Griffin said. “We fought hard this week and our focus is on the NCAA team championships.” Men end season, but‘should be ranked’ The Oregon men’s tennis team’s sea son ended on a positive note last week end at the Pac-10 Championships. After struggling in the first round, the Ducks picked up consolation wins that could help the team’s confidence going into the offseason. UO softball squad hosts Hawaii today in doubleheader ■ Hawaii travels to Eugene to face Oregon softball for a two-game set at Howe Field ON TAP Who: vs. Hawaii By Chris Cabot Oregon Daily Emerald The Oregon softball team takes another break from Pacific-10 Conference play today as it hosts Hawaii (32-22 overall, 13-7 Western Ath letic Conference) in a doublehead er at Howe Field beginning at 2 p.m. Oregon (22-24 overall, 1-14 Pac 10) is coming off a three-game weekend in Arizona where the Ducks won their first conference game in nearly 13 months over No. 5 Arizona State on Saturday. The Ducks also lost a game to the Sun Devils 11-3 on Sunday and a 6-0 contest against No. 2 Arizona. The Rainbow Wahine are coming off four games against Portland State during the weekend, where the two teams each won two games. In Oregon’s four games against the Vikings this season, the Ducks are 3-1. Leading the way offensively for Hawaii is junior shortstop Kate Judd-, who is batting .360 overall and .439 in 20 WAC games, including four doubles, five home runs and 10 RBI in those league games. Elite list of competitors grows for Pre Classic ■The competition lists are already pouring in for the Pre Classic and match-ups are already forming By Hank Hager Oregon Daily Emerald Unless you’ve cleared 15-feet in the women’s pole vault, you’re not going to be competing at Hayward Field on May 26. At least, that’s according to Tom Jor dan, meet director for the 28th Pre fontaine Classic Grand Prix. “It’s a very exclusive club,” he said. “If you’ve cleared 15-feet, I’ll pay for you to come from anywhere in the world.” Unless, of course, your name is Becky Holliday. The Oregon junior’s Duck status makes her the exception, even if she doesn’t clear the required mark, Jordan said. Holliday has cleared 14-1.25 this season, and her personal best is 14-4. But Jordan said she might skip the Prefontaine meet in favor of the Turn to Pre Classic, page 12
