Fall 2.001 Events Snowboard Video Mini Festival The OP and Boardsports bring you the best new snowboard videos of the season! Join us as we see some of the industry’s best new releases: “True Life” - a Mack Dawg/Forum Snowboard production, “The Empire” - an Xodus Produc tion, and “Brainstorm” - a Kingpin Production. Raffle prizes and gift certificates for hot snow gear will also be included. Free! Thursday, 7:00 pm: 100 Willamette Hall OP Kayak Pool Sessions Discover or perfect your roll in a warm pool this fall. The Outdoor Program has reserved space at Gerlinger Pool on the UO Campus for five skill building sessions. Instruction is not provided so bring a friend who can help you with your roll. Small pool means space will fill fast. Pre-registration and payment required at O.P. Office. There is a discount for prepaying for all five sessions. Pool Session: UO students and OP Co-op members $3, General Admission $5. OP Kayak Rental $5 (first-come basis). Thursday, 7:30 pm: EMU Outdoor Program Rock Climbing Clinic The OP and the Outdoor Pursuits Program (OPP) have teamed up once again to bring you a fun day of rock climbing technique instruction. Taught by the OPP’s own Tim Garland, the clinic is aimed at beginners and interme diates that want the opportunity to focus on their footwork and place their hands effectively. The OPP will provide rock shoes, harnesses, and belay devices for a $3 rental fee. The clinic provides 4 hours of instruction and costs $3 for students and OP Co-op members,$5 general public. Registration is limited to 10 participants; pre-regis ter, pay, and reserve gear at the OP Office. Saturday, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm: Skinner’s Butte Climbing Columns OP Trip Initiator Clinic_ Really? Access to all that equipment and vehicles to do trips when and where I want? Yep! Become an OP trip initiator: it’s easy! The first night covers OP philosophy, liability, trip planning and procedures. Saturday we’ll go over equipment, Bam, vehicles, safety and more, then do a short fun trip down the McKenzie River. Attendance at both sessions is re quired to become a river trip initiator. If you can’t go boating on Saturday, you can still come for the morning Bam session. Cost: $12 for river trip. Thursday, 7:30 pm: EMU Outdoor Program Saturday, 9:00 am: The Barn 100 Hikes in Eastern Oregon UO alumnus, Register Guard columnist, and author of nine books about Oregon, Bill Sullivan has just released his latest Oregon hiking guide and he’s coming to the UO to share his latest achievement. Bill’s hiking guides are used daily by OP staff, students, and community members. Come explore the alpine lakes, gold mining towns, and bubbling hotsprings of Eastern Oregon at this facinating slide presentation. Free. An amazing variety of gear goodies at garage sale prices will change hands at this swap. Limited table space is available on a first come, first-serve basis. Parking provided in the EMU visitor's parking lot. Private sellers only please. Free. Clinic cost Campus Tree Identification Sat., Nov. 17th “The Spirit of Alpinism” Kitty Calhoun American alpinist Kitty Calhoun began climbing at the age of 18 on the crags of her native South Carolina. Soon afterward she turned her attention to the Himalaya, focusing on small teams and extremely commited objec tives. Since that time Kitty has climbed several Himalayan routes, as well as routes in South America and Alaska. She is currently a professional climber on the Patagonia team. Join us as Kitty weaves stories, in a unique way, about her experiences climbing in Alaska, Nepal, and India. Free to UO students and OP Co-op members, $2 general admission. Thursday, 7:30 pm: 100 Willamette Hall Nov 1 Using Avalanche Transceivers Nov 13 I In a full burial avalanche incident, only immediate and effective search and rescue by companions offers real chance of survivial. An avalanche beacon, used properly, _| can be a powerful tool for rescue. This clinic will cover the basics of avalanche rescue procedures, including hands-on use of transceivers that are available for use through the OP’s Allard and Casey Memorial Safety Library (for details see p.3).
