Ducks finish ninth in Pac, still notch best 2001 score ■The Oregon women's golf team builds momentum at the Pac-10 Championships By Peter Hockaday Oregon Daily Emerald You look at the stat sheet and see that the Oregon women’s golf team finished ninth at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships in Tempe, Ariz., Wednesday. Failure. Then you look at the Ducks’ score, a three-round total of 914, and realize it was the best three round total for Oregon this season. Success. “We were focused and played hard and really came through,” Oregon head coach Shannon Rouillard said. The Ducks dropped a spot on the final day of the Pac-lOs at the Karsten Golf Course, beating out only Washington State at the con ference final. Oregon was led by the play of senior captain Jerilyn White, who finished ninth overall in the individual race. “That’s a really great accom plishment because there are so many good golfers in the Pac 10,’’said Rouillard in regard to White. Second-ranked Arizona won the tournament by three strokes over Stanford. The most thrilling competition came from the individual race, where Arizona teammates Lorena Ochoa and Natalie Gulbis ended in a tie for first after all the holes had been played. Kathy Cho, Megan Heckerot hand Lacy Erickson finished tied for 42nd. The Oregon golfers now await their fate concerning the NCAA Regionals. The Ducks could com pete at one of three sites: Corvallis, West Lafayette, Ind., or Chapel Hill, N.C. Wherever they may take place, the regionals will occur May 10-12. Sports brief Italian race driver killed in test car accident in Germany BERLIN — Michele Alboreto, a one-time Formula One star, was killed when the Audi he was test driving crashed in eastern Germany, the carmaker said Wednesday. The 44-year-old Italian was behind the wheel of a new R8 car when it spun out of control and turned over on a straight section of the Lausitzring circuit, in what Audi’s sporting chief Wolfgang Ullrich called an “incom prehensible tragedy. ” The carmaker said it didn’t yet know what caused the crash, adding that the car had already completed thousands of miles of tests on various circuits without in cident. German police said they were in vestigating the crash, which took place amid the team’s preparations for the Le Mans 24-hour race to be held in June. The Associated Press
