Ducks step up at Pac-10s ■The Oregon women s golf team moves from ninth to eighth at the Pac-10 Championships By Peter Hockaday Oregon Daily Emerald Jerilyn White slipped a little, the rest of the Oregon women’s team got up, and the end result was that the Ducks moved up a spot head ing into the fi nal day at the Pacific-10 Con ference Cham pionships in Tempe, Ariz. Oregon moved up from ninth to eighth at the Karsten Golf Course Tuesday. White, the Ducks’ senior captain, shot a two-over par 74 to slip from fourth to eighth-place in the individual race. Oregon seniors Claire Hunter and Dawn Berry im proved on their first-round per formances to finish in a tie for 29th. Home-state powers Arizona and Arizona State took over ASU’s course Tuesday, and now share the lead. Stanford is sec ond, three strokes behind the co leaders, while California and Southern California round out the top five teams. Washington stands in sixth and UCLA is sev enth. That White is pacing the Ducks comes as no surprise, but the fact that she isn’t contending for the title is a shock. The Salem native is coming off her first individual win, at the Peg Barnard Classic in Palo Alto, Calif., last weekend. White shot rounds of 68 and 72 to win that tournament. She has paced the Oregon team at every tournament the Ducks have played in 2001. Hunter and Berry both im proved their position at the Pac 10s Tuesday, moving up from 34th and 45th, respectively, to their current position in 29th. Hunter stayed consistent in the second round, matching her 77 from Monday, while Berry dropped her score from 79 to 75. Berry’s round was the second best outing for the Ducks Tues day. Other Duck finishers were jun ior Kathy Cho (159, 48th), fresh man Lacy Erickson (160, 51st) and sophomore Megan Heckeroth (162, 53rd). Oregon may be too far back to catch UCLA, and may have trou ble behind them. The Bruins are 10 strokes ahead of the Ducks, while ninth-placed Oregon State is only one stroke behind Oregon. The final round of the Pac-10 Championships will take place today in Tempe. UO tennis to take on UCLA ■The Ducks face UCLA today in a make-up match on the dawn of the Pac-10 tournament By Robbie McCallum Oregon Daily Emerald After a bittersweet weekend of competition, the Oregon women’s tennis team has one last chance for a tune-up, less than 24 hours away from the Pa cific-10 Confer ence Champi onships. With a tough, one-point loss to San Diego State still in their minds and the league tournament loom ing ahead, the Ducks will face a tall order today against No. 32 UCLA. The match, which will be played in Los Angeles, is only 70 miles away from the Pac-10 meet in Ojai, Calif., and was resched uled from a Feb. 24 rain-out. Head coach Jack Griffin is treat ing the match as a warm-up for the Pac-10 meet. At 0-7 in the confer ence, the Ducks are assured of ninth-place, regardless of the out come of today’s 1:30 p.m. match. With a 5-16 overall record, Ore gon is virtually eliminated from NCAA Tournament contention, but several individuals are still in the hunt for postseason bids. Freshmen sensations Courtney Na gle and Davina Mendiburu lead the team in total wins with 17 and 16, respectively. Sophomores Monika Geiczys and Jeanette Mattsson and junior Janice Nyland have switched off at the No. 1 singles position this sea son and have NCAA Tournament experience. Individual wins against UCLA foes today would look impressive to the NCAA selection commit tee, especially with the postsea son so close. The Bruins are led by No. 20 Sara Walker, No. 85 Petya Marino va and the NO. 19 duo of Lauren Fisher and Marinova in doubles play. Last season, Oregon nearly de feated UCLA at home, 5-4. Ny land and fellow junior Adeline Arnaud came up with big upsets in the match. Pac-10 action begins tomorrow with singles flights.
