On Sunday, UCLA (42-3, 5-3) comes to town looking to retain the nation’s best record and its No. 1 ranking. The Bruins are led by Natasha Watley, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Player of the Week. Watley leads the Pac-10 with 36 steals and has a 24-game hitting streak.In the circle, UCLA boasts two of the better pitchers in the conference in freshman Keira Goerl and junfor Amanda Freed. Goerl is a 16-game winner, while Freed is 17-3 with a 0.51 ERA. Freed is also hitting .323. In a showdown last Friday, the Huskies and Bruins met in L.A. in a 14-inning dual, the longest in both teams’ history. UCLA first base man Claire Sua won the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the 14th, giving the Bruins a 5-4 victory. Sua is third in the Pac-10 with a .428 batting average. The Bruins are hitting .353 as a team. Bollinger and Goerl both pitched all 14 innings. The Ducks face off against the Bruins at 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at Howe Field. Some of the nation’s top vaulters will chal lenge Reed, who is currently third on the national list. “She should do well,” fellow vaulter and All-American Karina Elstrom said. “Even with the hard competition.” Reed tied her own school record with a vault of 13 feet, 5 1/4 inches at the Washington Dual Meet Satur day and had close attempts at 13-9. Several other athletes could get a boost at Mt. SAC this weekend. Freshman javelin-thrower Sarah Malone, who has gotten close to NCAA automatic distances this year, will compete Sunday at Mt. SAC. Malone is currently sixth on the national list. Senior distance runner Hanna Smedstad could crack the NCAA Provisional list in the 5,000 today, after making the 10,000 list at the Washington Dual. Senior Holly Speight is looking to pole vault into better position on the NCAA Provi sional list and will attempt to do that today at Mt. SAC. Other than Smedstad, only four other racers will compete this week end. Junior Cameo Davis will try to build on the momentum from her personal record in the 400 hurdles last weekend, as she will compete in that event and the 100 hurdles at the Pomona-Pitzer today. Eri Macdonald and Annette Mosey will both com pete in the 800 at Mt. SAC Saturday. All the athletes agree that the com petition could lead to improved scores and will help them for the big ger meets later in the season. “It’s going to be a real test on how I can react under pressure situations that will prepare me for other meets like the Pac-10 Championships and nationals,” Morrison said. Pappas, the only entry from the men’s squad, will compete in the Azusa Pacific decathlon today. The competition will conclude Sunday at Mt. SAC with the shot put, hammer, javelin and discus throws. Now, just because the offense garnered most of the attention Thursday, that doesn’t mean there wasn’t some serious defense being played. There certainly were hard hits — including one bone-crushing se quence where a player crashed into a referee, who then took a camera man down with him. Sophomore free safety Keith Lewis always seemed to be in on every tackle and “was all over the field,” according to Bellotti. The Oregon coach also was impressed with linebackers Kevin Mitchell and David Moretti. Oregon resumes practice Mon day, Tuesday and Thursday before ending its spring season with the annual Spring Game on April 28 at Hillsboro Stadium near Portland. “The defense will be ready next week,” cornerback Steve Smith said.
