Letter to the editor Preseason tickets not a done deal I would like to clarify the infor mation in the ODE article, “Presea son tickets no longer available for free” (March 14). , The information in the article is currently the offer on the table and negotiations are in progress. Noth ing has been decided on this issue to date, and the four students on the Athletic Department Finance Com mittee are working hard to come to an agreement with the Athletic De partment that is in the best interests of the students. Students do not currently pay for the preseason tickets with inci dental fees. Incidental fees only pay for conference games. The Athletic Department has provided preseason tickets free of charge to students for several years and feels it is no longer capable of doing this. Fifty percent of the fair market value has been a benchmark for the amount that students would pay in incidental fees to the Athletic De partment. Ticket prices are going up significantly next season for both football and men’s basketball games. The incidental fee allocated to the Athletic Department will not cover 50 percent of the fair market value. This is why the Athletic De partment has offered to let students retain the seating for conference games during football season and basketball games and take away the preseason game football seats to in crease their revenue. If you would like more informa tion, or would like to express your opinion to the ADFC about this is sue, please e-mail the committee at adfin@gladstone.uoregon.edu. Jennifer Greenough senior political science ADFC chair Bergerson continued from page 2 or scream at people from a podi um. Jesus drew people to him with his gentle grace, abundant love and quiet dignity. And there’s nothing graceful or dignified about parading down 13th Avenue wear ing a sandwich board and yelling about hell, fire and brimstone at the top of your voice. Bible Jim received all kinds of at tention for being an obnoxious Jesus freak, while Doug is barely noticed for his quiet commitment to God. Now Doug would be the first to tell you that he is no saint because he is just doing what he feek the Lord asked him to do. But that is what makes his presence on cam pus such a blessing. He is following his heart, having faith in God and doing what Jesus would do. Doug is one man who seems to know what it means to be a Christian. Kleckner continued from page 2 sionate about their beliefs, may en joy the thrill of having a great enemy to fight. No matter which side they’re on, the other side appears to be destroying the world. But that sense of “us vs. them,” of “good vs. evil,” doesn’t work in everyone’s best interest. Actually, it helps bad things continue to happen, because we become un able to work together to change anything. Knowing how to sit down at the table together, armed with correct information, and sort out where everyone can agree, is more than just good community building. It’s actually the ultimate revolutionary act. * One of my favorite hard-edged techno bands, Meat Beat Manifesto, released an album in 1992, “Satyri con,” that was both danceable and filled with biting social commen tary. One of my favorite lines ex plains how hard it is to break out of the “either-or” mentality: “Yes/all our life is spent/in this permanent brainwashed con tempt/Yes/all our life is spent/in perpetuated malcontent.” If we’re going to be a part of our world, and if the world is ever to change, we all need to be revolu tionaries, break out of our brain washing and start to see others in the civic discourse as nothing more than people. No one is the enemy, except the brainwashers who tell us that we can’t get along with different ideologies. And even the brainwashers aren’t the enemy; we just need to prove them wrong. Being involved, finding com mon ground and doing the re search aren’t necessarily easy tasks. And they don’t eliminate the hard decisions in the world. As Bettman found, sometimes they don’t win you the most fans. But they’re necessary if we’re ever go ing to build a real community. Michael J.
