■The Ducks finish 15th of 16 teams durign their first tournament of 2001 By Peter Hockaday Oregon Daily Emerald Oregon senior golfer Jerilyn White played two spectacular rounds of golf at the Arizona Wildcat In vitational this week, and she ended the tournament in sev enth place. Unfortunately for the Oregon women’s golf team, White’s score couldn’t count four times. Oregon finished 15th out of 16 teams at their first tournament of 2001, which ended Wednesday. White was the only Duck golfer to finish in the top 35 individually. “Jerilyn’s last two days were awe some,” Oregon head coach Shan non Rouillard said. “[The tourna ment] was a growing experience. We got a foundation to see what we need to work on.” Arizona, who hosted the three day tournament, won by eight strokes over Stanford. The Wild cats’ Lorena Ochoa won the indi vidual title, five strokes ahead of White. Junior Kathy Cho was the sec ond-best Oregon finisher, carding a 230 to finish 37th. Redshirt fresh man Lacy Erickson finished 77th with a 245, while seniors Dawn Berry (87th) and Claire Hunter (91st) also placed. Freshman Katie Cunningham finished 92nd. The tournament was the first for the Ducks in the winter/spring sea son. Oregon will play three more tournaments this spring before par ticipating in the Pacific-10 Confer ence Championships May 10-25. If the Pac-10 Championships had been held in Arizona this week, Oregon would have finished last in the conference. Southern California finished fourth in the 15-team field, Washington finished eighth, UCLA finished 11th and California fin ished 14th, six strokes ahead of the Ducks. Oregon will next play in the GTE “Mo”morial March 5-6 in Houston, Texas. Azle Malinao-Alvarez Emerald Oregon’s Eugene Harris (left) will be one of many wrestlers looking to pin their opponents at the Pac-10 Championships. Wrestling continued from page 7 A has a 4-4 season record. The Bend native is 6-8 overall. The unexpected return of Lee this month forced a wrestle-off for the 174 pound slot. Williams (8-15) defeated Lee twice to earn the nod. Lee hadn’t wrestled a collegiate match in over a year. Final Pac-10 Standings No. 11 Arizona State wrapped up the Pac-10 regular season title on February 4 with a win over Cal State-Bakersfield. The Sun Devils finished the season 4-0 in the con ference, 10-5 overall. Arizona State and second place Boise State never met during the regular season, but the Broncos’ upset loss to third place Oregon State took them out of the running. The Ducks (4-4) finished fourth behind the Beavers (6-2) after wrapping up the season with five straight dual match losses. Recruiting watch All three of Oregon’s early signees won their respective dis trict championships last weekend and move on to the state tourna ment. Shane Webster, the top-ranked 171-pounder in the nation, from Central Point’s Crater High, stormed through his bracket en route to his third consecutive state tournament appearance. Webster is 34-0 this season and the fourth wrestler from Crater to sign with Oregon in six years. Ten miles to the northeast, Eagle Point’s Chet McBee also won his district bracket. McBee is ranked third among Oregon preps and is expected to wrestle at either 149 or 157 pounds next season. Halfway across the country, heavyweight Neil Phillips of Bro ken Arrow, Okl., also won his dis trict tournament. Phillips is the younger brother of current Oregon wrestler Branson Phillips. Rankings The devastating Civil War loss to Oregon State last Wednesday cost the Ducks several places in the Amateur Wrestling News polls. Oregon dropped to No. 20*in the team rankings following their fifth straight loss. Sophomore heavyweight Eric Webb dropped one spot to No. 5 af ter sitting out the Oregon State match with a concussion. Senior All-Americans Doug Lee and Chael Sonnen remained the No. 7 wrestlers at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively.
