Shoot ’em up: Craighead named week’s best
■The Ducks have found a
way to win without a strong
rebounding game

After a torrid 10-for-13 shooting
performance in Oregon’s first Pacif
ic-10 Conference home stand last
week, junior guard Jamie Craighead
was named the conference Player of
the Week Tuesday.
Craighead, the Pac-10 leader with
36 three-pointers, led the Ducks (10
3 overall, 3-0 Pac-10) with 15 points
en route to a 72-54 victory over Stan
ford Saturday, and tallied 14 points
in an 86-56 win against California
last Thursday.
“I don’t really see it as a big deal,”
Craighead said. “It was just big to
win those two games and be where
we are in the conference standings.
“It’s cool, but I probably won’t
think about it ... I probably won’t
even call my mom. ”
ForCraighead, it’s all about the team.
“Other people do so much to help
me get my open shots and allow me
to do some things offensively,” she
said. “Maybe they should give out a
team of the week award. ”
Rebounding woes
Oregon is the worst rebounding
team in the Pac-10 — on both sides
of the court.
The Ducks are averaging just
21.38 defensive rebounds per con
test, while the conference’s best re
bounding team is grabbing nearly
28 boards a game.
“We like to tell ourselves it’s be
cause we’re shooting so well that
there aren’t many rebounding oppor
tunities,” senior forward Brianne
Meharry said. “But it’s definitely a
big weakness for us ... and it’s going
to be a concern in a game where we
are not hitting our shots. ”
Oregon was out-rebounded by
both Cal and Stanford last week by
a 73-52 margin. Against the Cardi
nal, the Ducks gave up 21 offensive
boards, while picking up just eight.
“We need to establish ourselves on
the boards,” Craighead said. “We
need to box out, get our butts on peo
ple, push them out and get the ball.
We won those games without re
bounding, but I think we’re going to
come up against a team where that
could bite us in the butt. And Wash
ington could be that team. ”
Oh yeah, Washington (Oregon’s
opponent on Thursday) is the best
rebounding team in the conference
— on both sides of the court.
... but they are shooting well
Of the eight players in the confer
ence that are shooting better than 50
percent, half are Ducks. Seniors
Jenny Mowe (.587), Angelina
Wolvert (.536), Meharry (.524) and
Lindsey Dion (.519) are all among
the league’s top eight leaders in
field-goal percentage.
It only makes sense, then, that
Oregon is also the top shooting
team in the conference at .487.
Shreve city
Sophomore point guard Kourt
ney Shreve has molded into the
starting role nearly flawlessly for
Oregon in place of the injured
Shaquala Williams.
Against Stanford, Shreve sank a
career-high three threes, while
grabbing a career-best eight re
bounds. She also scored 11 points
with a respectable two turnovers.
“She’s doing a really good job,”
Meharry said. “It took the presea
son to get her to figure out the plays
and figure out how to handle pres
sure, but she’s settled down and is
playing extremely well.”

Camby admits he lost it’ while punching out his coach

PURCHASE, N.Y. — A much
calmer Marcus Camby took full
blame for his actions as he awaited
word Tuesday from the NBA on the
length of his suspension for throw
ing a punch at an opponent that in
stead decked his own coach.
“I regret that I lost my cool, be
cause that’s not me,” Camby said at
the Knicks’ practice facility. “Those
who have been around me since I’ve
been here know that I’m an easygo
ing-type guy.
I just lost it when 1 saw that blood,
and I was truly, truly in the wrong. ”
Camby’s punch did not strike Dan
ny Ferry of San Antonio because
coach Jeff Van Gundy stepped be
tween them at the last moment. Cam
by’s head collided with Van Gundy’s,
opening a cut above Van Gundy’s left
eye thatrequired 12-15 stitches.
Camby had scrapes above both
his eyes Tuesday — one from being
poked by Ferry, one from colliding
with his coach. Van Gundy’s eye
also remained swollen.
“Seeing Jeff today, I just feel sorry
tor the guy, Camby said. Because
if you look at him you’d think he’s
really been in a fight.”
While jostling for rebounding po
sition, Ferry struck Camby in the eye
late in the fourth quarter of New
York’s 104-82 victory over the Spurs
Monday. After being restrained by
one referee and speaking with anoth
er, Camby suddenly bolted toward
Ferry near the scorer’s table and
threw a roundhouse punch.
If Van Gundy hadn’t stepped in
the way, the punch might have con
nected and Camby would be facing
an even longer suspension
As Camby left the court, he
grabbed a folding chair — an action
he admitted was “ridiculous” — be
fore a security official took it away
from him. He stood outside the
Spurs’ locker room before being per
suaded to leave, then spent another
20 minutes in a tunnel near where the
Spurs' team bus was idling.
“My car was blocked in, so people
thought I was down there waiting to
start something. If you had seen
(Knicks president) Dave Checketts
trying to push this car out of the way
to get my car out ot there, it was the
funniest thing,” Camby said.
Camby met with Van Gundy or
Tuesday morning after speaking
with several teammates by tele
phone Monday night.
“We talked about everything
about suspensions and all that, anc
he (Van Gundy) said, ‘Despite a\
that, you played the best defense or

seen,’” Camby said. “Coming fron
him, it was great... and I respect hirr
more today because of the conver
sations we had.”
