Men’s track adds coach ■The Oregon men’s track and field team brings in a talented former athlete to coach its throwers By Jeff Smith Oregon Daily Emerald Former Northern Iowa track and field thrower Matt Casillas had al ways heard about the distinguished track tradition and fan support at Oregon. And now, he gets to experience it up close. Casillas was added to the Oregon men’s track and field coaching staff Thursday as a volunteer coach. Casillas’ job duties will consist of directing the Ducks’ shot put, ham mer and 35-lb. throwers. “Former teammates of mine have told me about Oregon and the great track fellowship, and that’s very ex citing,” said Casillas, whose main events as a college athlete were the three that he will coach at Oregon. “The throwers already here are all very coachable and talented, and we’d like to see big things from them.” One of the main reasons that Casillas joined head coach Martin Smith’s staff was the opportunity to reunite with his former college coach, Bill Lawson. Lawson is in his second year of overseeing the field events. “Coach Lawson was an excellent collegiate coach for me, so I’m ex cited to work under him and learn more from him,” Casillas said. “I think a lot of it had to do with the work ethic I had under him, and I’d like to get the same out of these guys.” Casillas, 27, continues to rank first in the weight throw on the Northern Iowa indoor list at 67 feet, seven inches. During his senior sea son in college in 1996, he captured two titles in the indoor shot put and the weight throw. Now, he is excited about the challenge of becoming a coach for the Oregon track and field team, which opens its indoor season next weekend at the Iowa State Open in Ames, Iowa. “This is a great opportunity to work with Oregon under the direc tion of a great staff,” Casillas said. Women’s win continued from page 7 the Bears squandered several sec ond-chance points as they shot just 35.3 percent from the field. The Cardinal, which boasts 6 foot-6 center Carolyn Moos and sharp-shooter Lauren St. Clair, won’t waste such opportunities. But Oregon helped itself by building an early lead against Cali fornia. Duck head coach Jody Runge was able to rest her starting lineup, while Stanford’s starting five ran out of gas against Oregon State. “I think my big thing in the sec ond half was just to have our subs maintain the margin,” Runge said. “They’ve been working very hard, Women’s continued from page 7 shooter,” Horstmeyer said. “You just don’t give her threes.” Cal’s zone defense clogged up the middle in the first half, prevent ing the Ducks from getting the ball in the post to Angelina Wolvert and Jenny Mowe, who took a combined seven shots in the first period, com pared to the team’s eight three point attempts. Criaghead’s final bucket of the game came with 1:20 remaining in the first half— a jumper from just in side the three-point line — to give the Ducks a commanding 42-23 lead but they still have a few jitters. Just to have them get some quality min utes and keep the margin was im portant.” C ( / think my big thing in the second half was just to have our subs maintain the margin Jody Runge Women’s head coach jj Wolvert finished with a game high 16 points against Cal, and point guard Kourtney Shreve turned in a solid performance with 11 points and five assists. Dion recorded nine points along with five assists, while Mowe scored eight points and blocked five shots. “I think we are very ready for [the Stanford] game,” Wolvert said. “We took care of California tonight and that was our first step. Now a lot of us are just focused. I know this is my last time I play Stanford at home. “I have a huge problem with be ing ranked second behind them and our whole team wants to come out and prove ourselves, and that’s all that we’re focused on. We want to show people that you don’t rank us second after you win two Pac 10 titles.” [Craighead] was, you’d better get them the basketball,” head coach Jody Runge said. Overall, Oregon was 7 of 13 from long distance, with sophomore point guard Kourtney Shreve hit ting two, and senior Lindsey Dion adding another. The Bears, on the other hand, were just 2 of 8 from downtown. “If they’re hitting the outside shots, that’s the best thing that can happen for a post,” said Wolvert, who finished with 16 points. “Be cause sooner or later they’re going to have to go out there and start guarding that. “They were definitely on tonight. That’s just a bonus... I love seeing it.” Virtual Office Systems Inc.
