Those who fall under the catego ry of “high risk” include: people 65 years old and older; residents of nursing homes and chronic-care fa cilities; adults and children who have a type of lung disease or other chronic illness; children who are taking long-term aspirin therapy; women in their second or third trimester of pregnancy; household members of people in high-risk groups; and health care workers, as determined by the CDC. “There have been a lot of people filtering themselves out of the clin ics if they realize they don’t fit into the ‘high risk’ category,” said Sandy Mower, the clinic services supervi sor for Lane County Public Health Services. “But we have still had to turn away some of those who are ‘high risk’ because there just weren’t enough vaccinations.” Mowrer said the shortage will basi cally result in a lot of people not get ti ng immunized before the flu season starts. For some Lane County resi dents, this may be too late. “A flu vaccination takes up to two weeks to begin working and only lasts about a year, so if you’ve been vaccinated before it won’t do any good,” Mowrer said. Dotson said all Lane County resi dents can do is be patient and wait for the full shipment to come in. Until then, he asks that only those who fall in the “high risk” category come for vaccinations. “Even doctor’s offices and other health care providers cannot get the vaccine, so we will continue screening those who come to the clinics in order to determine who needs the vaccination the most,” Dotson said. Florida continued from page 1 Lieberman said she had certified “an incomplete and inaccurate count” and he and Gore would challenge it. But Bush, in a nationally-tele vised address from Austin, said “I respectfully ask” that Gore recon sider further contesting the hair-line Florida count. Harris said Bush had 2,912,790 votes and Gore had 2,912,253. That gave Bush the 5 3 7-vote lead out of 6 million cast, although Harris reject ed partial returns from Palm Beach County. An unofficial AP tally in cluding recounted Palm Beach County votes showed Bush ahead by 357. The secretary of state’s formal dec laration, which set off GOP cheers outside the Florida capital and at the state capital in Austin, Texas: “Accordingly, on behalf of the state elections canvassing commission and in accordance with the laws of the state of Florida, I hereby declare Governor George W. Bush the winner of Florida’s 25 electoral votes.” Lieberman said, “The integrity of our self-government” could be cast into doubt without Democratic steps to get the most complete and accurate count possible.
