Double OT war ends in tie ■ Oregon and Oregon State lock horns at Pape Field Friday, but the game ends in a 2-2 tie in the rain By Peter Hockaday Oregon Daily Emerald There was a war on Pape Field Friday, and the Oregon soccer team was unhappy with the outcome. In soccer’s Civil War game, the Ducks and Beavers played to a 2-2 tie in the rain Friday afternoon. Ore gon had leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but couldn’t put away Oregon State even after two 15-minute, sudden death overtime periods. The teams were evenly matched in every aspect of the game except their reactions to the result. “We should have come away with a win,” Oregon forward Crys tal David said. David had the Ducks’ second score of the game, an unassisted goal in the 52nd minute that put Oregon ahead 2-1. The Ducks’ first goal came from the foot of freshman Ann Westermark, who put away Marie Selby’s free kick 10 minutes into the first half after sophomore Julie McLellan tied up Beaver goalie Jeri ka Duran and forced the ball free. But Oregon State answered after both scores. The Beavers’ first score came five minutes into the second half, when Beavers forward BreeAnna John gave Katie Hender son a pass downfield that left Hen derson with only Oregon goalie Sarah Peters to beat. She did, tying the game 1-1. Oregon State scored its second goal 28 minutes later when Court ney Carter chipped a ball over Pe ters’ head. The tie will keep Oregon, now 1 3-1 in Pacific-10 Conference play, in the bottom quarter of the Pac-10 standings. The Beavers were one of two teams trailing the Ducks before Friday’s match, with Arizona being the other. “Obviously we aspire to be higher than that,” said Oregon head coach Bill Steffen about the Ducks’ Pac-10 placing. “And you don’t do that by tying games. You do that by win ning games.” Westermark and David’s goals came as pleasant surprises to the Ducks. Westermark started the year at midfield, but moved up front when David and junior forward Beth Bowler were injured. With David, Bowler and senior T.J. John son back on the field, Westermark stepped up even more, taking six shots and notching her second goal of the year. David, returning to the lineup for the first time in five games, fit into the offense right away, taking three shots and scoring her fourth goal of the year. David is now two goals shy of leading the team in goals scored. “I just wanted to make a contribu tion,” David said. The Ducks will take on the tough est team in the Pac-10 conference, undefeated Washington, at Pape Field next Sunday. Oregon will also play Washington State Friday.
