SI Road Trippers From Dixie Chicks to Destiny’s Child, this fall’s CONCERT TOURS offer plenty of pop performers to ^o around. BY WO OK KIM WITH ALL THE HUBBUB about MP3s, Napster, and recordable CDs, there’s still something to be said for seeing your favorite artists live, on stage, performing for your listening pleasure. Besides, where else will you be able to buy that really overpriced concert T shirt? Here’s a six-pack of the fall’s most promising tours. MOBY DJ. Vegan. Philosopher. Christian ide alist. Yes, we’re talking about Moby, everybody’s favorite living descendant of Moby Dick author Hennan Melville. The veteran knob-twirler had been mulling over a wish list of opening acts, including Stereolab and the British band Moloko, before settling on elec tronica collective Hybrid. That lineup should ensure that fans will have a, uh, whale of a good time. Where Just about all of North America...even Canada When September through November Why According to The Guinness Book of World Records, he’s the writer and performer of the world’s fastest single (the song “Thou sand” reaches an epileptic-seizure inducing 1,015 beats per minute). Can your ears withstand the aural assault? ANT DiFRANCO On the basis other career thus far, this self-empowered neo-folkie would have done well on Survivor: She embodies B.B.’s work ethic, Susan’s blunt hon esty, and Sean’s fondness for beach bowling (we kid, we kid). One thing’s for sure: Touring is in her blood. Dur ing the past decade, this performing dynamo has been averaging 200 shows a year. Where East Coast and the Midwest When Sep tember1 through November1 Why Giv en her commitment to social and femi nist causes (which is, sadly, all too rare among her peers), seeing DiFranco in concert is empowering in itself. SUPERGRASS Clever, irreverent, and brimming with musical inventiveness, Super grass are purveyors of guitar-driven Brit pop so exuberant it’s practically a parody of itself. Bring plenty of atti tude, as this band is all about being tres cheek. Where The Midwest, Southwest, and West Coast When Oc tober and November Why These blokes should make for an interesting evening when paired with the some what more introspective sounds of tour mates Pearl Jam. DIXIE CHICKS Just how big are these three gals? To clumsily invert an overused metaphor, Tiger Woods is the Dixie Chicks of golf. Their first major-label effort, Wide Open Spaces, was one of country music’s best-selling debuts, and their latest, Fly, just notched its impressive 49th week on the Bill board country chart. Where Over 70 cities in the South and Midwest and on the East Coast When Now through Dec. 1 Why Like the large crowds that follow Tiger’s every move, here’s a chance to watch a band playing at the peak of their talent. DESTINY’S CHILD Never underestimate the buying power of teen girls: These TRL favorites hap pen to be the top-selling female group in the country. They’re cur rently on tour with Christina Agui lera.
