Teen chaos follows after-school gunfire bbDbKAL WAY, Wash. — Two high schools in a south Seattle sub urb were closed after a 16-year-old boy was wounded Monday in an af ter-school shooting that apparently involved a simmering conflict be tween two groups of teens, authori ties said. The shooting occurred near Fed eral Way High School. That school and Thomas Jefferson High School were ordered to be closed Tuesday, said Tom Murphy, Federal Way schools superintendent. In Monday’s incident, a white Ford Mustang deliberately rear-end ed one of two cars of teens going to play basketball, Federal Way police spokesman Brett Hatfield said. The Mustang occupants fired as many as four shots, wounding a teen who had been in the rear-ended car. That youth, who was not identi fied, was hit in the right ankle. He was listed in satisfactory condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Police were looking for two sus pects in the Mustang, which fled the scene. Hatfield said police had “some pretty strong leads.” Police said the shooting sprang from “an ongoing conflict between two groups.” A dispute at a prep basketball game last Friday night had appar ently raised tensions at the schools, Murphy said. Police did not specify the nature of the conflict they be lieved led to the shooting. The shooting happened at about 2:30 p.m. about two blocks from Federal Way High. The first police officer on the scene, a Federal Way police school resource, officer who heard the shots, reported finding 30-50 stu dents fighting in the street. Several students rushed up to him, de manding police action. The officer pepper-sprayed several students be cause he felt threatened, Hatfield said. The officer was not immedi ately identified. Although students who ride the bus had already left for the day, po lice asked the schools to keep other students locked inside. They were later released about 3 p.m., schools spokeswoman Diane Turner said. Superintendent Murphy said school officials and police would meet Tuesday and decide whether it was safe to reopen the schools Wednesday. Counseling was to be available Tuesday — off campus — for stu dents and parents who wished it, Murphy said. The Associated Press Second student found after kayaking mishap BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) — A body found near Lummi Island is that of a second University of Washington student who died on a kayaking trip, the Whatcom Coun ty medical examiner’s office said Monday. The body, found Sunday by a pleasure boater, was identified as that of Grant Tyler, 22, of Billings, Mont. The medical examiner’s of fice said he had drowned. The Coast Guard, the Navy, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office and the Canadian Coast Guard have been searching for Tyler since the body of his kayaking companion, Stephen Buergey, 20, was found Saturday by a boater near James Is land, on the southeast side of the San Juan Island chain. The search for the pair began Friday morning, after a waterproof bag containing their identification washed ashore. The men, described as experi enced kayakers, left Lummi Island northeast of the San Juans in a two person kayak on Wednesday. They planned to visit Patos Island before returning to Lummi on Saturday. Fifteen-knot winds and 2- to 4 foot seas were reported in the area Friday night. “Those weather conditions were relatively mild,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Tiffany Powell. “Any thing could have happened.” BIG GREBI EVENTS & SILVER PEOPLE PRESENTS WELCOMES TO THE EUGENE HILTON & CONFERENCE CENTER PLUS SPECIAL GUESTS Kerosene Dream HILTON BALLROOM EUGENE, OREGON WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 27 7:00 PM DOORS - 8:00 PH SHOW TICKETS AVAILABLE AT ALL FRB MEYER FASTIXX OUTLETS (STATEWIDE) AND THE WILD DUCK.
