Boyfriend breaks trust during break-up, gets STD
Dear Harlan,
My boyfriend has just told me
that he has contracted a sexually
transmitted disease. We were sep
arated for a
very brief time
and in this
time he slept
with another
woman with
out protec
tion. Shortly
after this inci
dent we made
up. In the
HARLAN month follow
ing, he never told me that he had
slept with someone else, thereby
putting my body at risk.
I still love him, but I am unsure
if I can ever trust him again. He
would like to try to salvage our re
lationship, but I don-t know if the
trust can be rebuilt especially
since this is a long-distance rela
tionship (until we get back togeth
er this fall). Do you have any ad
vice about what I should do or
questions I should be asking my
self?
Full of questions
Dear Full,
Advice
help me
Harlan
The first question is “Why is
my boyfriend so stupid, reckless
and selfish?” The next question is
“How many sexually transmitted
diseases did he give me?” The fi
nal question is “Why did I write
this guy because he’s only going
to make me further resent my id
iot boyfriend and get me upset
and worried about STDs?”
You can't trust him and you
shouldn't trust him. He ruined it.
The fact that he put your body at
risk and gave you no choice in the
matter is disgusting and inexcus
able. When it comes to something
so intimate and personal it's al
most impossible to forgive. Now,
he has to deal with the conse
quences. Hopefully, you don't
have to deal with them, too.
In the meantime, go to your
personal physician and get tested
regularly for STDs. You might
have something and not even
know it. Chlamydia can appear
with little or no symptoms. Geni
tal warts can appear in places out
of sight of the naked eye. Symp
toms of Herpes often go unrecog
nized. HIV takes months before
being detected. Just get tested and
get far away from this guy.
