OlympicTrials continued from page 5 ranks him 11th on the Trials en try list. “It will definitely be the tough est meet I’ve competed in,” It will be pretty much for experience. Experi encegetting to jump with world class athletes and maybe take a crack at a spot on the Olympic team. Jason Boness Oregon high-jumper Boness said. “It will be pretty much for experience. Experience getting to jump with world class athletes and maybe take a crack at a spot on the Olympic team.” Boness knew he would com pete at this year’s trials after earn ing All-American honors at Northern Iowa. He leapt 7-3 on the first possible day for earning U.S. Olympic qualifying marks. Since transferring to Oregon, Boness has bettered his personal record by two feet and broken the school record. “I love it here and I love the crowd and I just want to give a little back to the community,” he said. Oregon will be well represent ed in the javelin. Junior Karis Howell comes into the javelin competition as the top Duck — barely. Oregon recruits Katy Polansky and Sarah Malone, ranked first and second nationally among preps, will also compete in the competition. Howell, an All-American, comes into the trials with a per sonal best of 173-1, just a foot ahead of Polansky. “I’m excited,” Howell said. “The trials have been something I’ve been looking forward to peak at, along with nationals. I hope all three of us do well.” “It will be an advantage, hav ing [Howell and Malone] around, being able to talk to them,” Polansky said. “It helps me re lax.” Polansky, who turns 18 this week, is seeded 15th on the entry list, just behind Howell. “I think I have a lot more in me as far as a throw,” Polansky said. “I think it’s just exciting to be able to go and compete at such a young age.” Sophomore Niki Reed will also compete in Sacramento. Reed’s school record pole vault of 13-5 1/2 ranks her 19th in the trials field and fifth among collegians. The Olympic games begin on Sept. 15 in Sydney, Australia. Duck alumna heads golf team I ■ Shannon Rouillard becomes the new women’s golf coach, replacing Renee Baumgartner, the former coach whom she played for between 1990-95 By Jeff Smith Oregon Daily Emerald In 1990, a young freshman walked on to the women’s golf team to play under then-head coach Renee Baumgartner. Ten years later, that young freshman be came Baum gartner’s suc cessor. Shannon R o u i 11 a r d was promot ed from her assistant coaching po> sition to be come the head coach of the Oregon women’s golf team. Never in her wildest dreams did she think that this day would come. “When [athletic director] Bill Moos offered me the job, I got very emotional,” said Rouillard, who played for the Ducks from 1990-95. “I couldn’t ask for any thing more than to be head coach at the University of Oregon.” Baumgartner had held the head coaching position at Ore gon for a total of 11 years and ROUILLARD helped bring the Ducks on par with the elite golf schools in the nation. She capped off her coaching career by leading her “dream team” to a tied-for-llth place finish at the 2000 NCAA Championships in Sun River. It If you would have told me when I walked on the team in 1990 that I would be the head coach 10 years later, I would have said you were crazy. Shannon Rouillard Oregon women’s golf head coach // was the school’s second-highest finish ever. Baumgartner will become the full-time associate athletics di rector and senior women’s ad ministrator and said she couldn’t be more thrilled with her re placement. “Shannon was really one of the pioneers who helped estab lish the reputation of the Oregon program,” Baumgartner said. “She has a strong commitment to academics, excellence and disci pline, and will carry on the tradi tion that we have established here very well.” Rouillard says that one of the reasons she is confident she’ll do well is that it hasn’t been long since she was a Duck athlete. “Part of what will help me in my coaching career is that I am still a competitor,” said Rouil- * lard, who was Oregon’s MVP in 1995. “I still know what it feels like to be nervous on the first tee or to have to sink a six-foot putt for birdie. I think it’s very impor tant that the players know that I can relate to what they’re experi encing.” Rouillard was named to the Oregon women’s golf team of the decade for the 90s and considers it an extreme privilege to be able to coach at the school she gradu ated from. “If you would have told me when I walked on the team in 1990 that I would be the head coach 10 years later, I would have said you were crazy,” Rouil lard said. “There aren’t too many people who get the privilege of becoming head coach at their alma mater.” Call (541) 346-4343 or stop by Room 300, Erb Memorial Union to place your ad today.
