Heinonen continued from page 11A a great track and field team. A great team also must have great athletes. The Ducks were already an es tablished women’s track and field team when Heinonen took over. Oregon’s most famous athlete of all time, Steve Prefontaine, died the previous year, but his legacy remained heavily felt. Prefontaine’s influence contin ues to bring athletes to Oregon. But according to Heinonen, not as much for the women. Because when the Oregon women were inducted into the NCAA in the late 1980s and the NorPac Conference became the Pac-10, the track and field schol arship market boomed on a na tionwide scale. History began meaning less and money began meaning more. Track was a staple sport for the Ducks, but scholarships were fo cused on Oregon’s revenue sports. Other schools began giving more lucrative scholarships early. Oregon did not. “We still offered^ athletes what they were worth, and then they earned more with their perform ances,” Heinonen said. “We were losing out on athletes left and right. “Full rides are now required to recruit. Lesser schools are offering full rides. We realize we have to do that to get people to come here.” ***** Heinonen said what happened to his team this season is compara ble to what happened in 1986. The Ducks didn’t fall from the top — they scored just four points at the NCAA meet last season, ty ing for 51st overall — but more than half of Heinonen’s team are underclassmen. Heinonen challenged his team to score 74 points at next season’s Pac-10 meet. To do so would dou ble Oregon’s score this season. “We’re much better than we showed at the Pac-10 meet,” he said. “That’s simply with the peo ple we have returning, not consid ering next year’s newcomers.” The Ducks haven’t slipped late ly at the national level. This week, the Oregon women have four ath letes at the NCAA Championships in Durham, N.C. “I don’t know if we can ever get back up to first, given today’s re cruiting,” Heinonen said, “but I think we can be competitive and respectable.” Heinonen has hope but looks ahead with a careful eye. “We’ll see next year whether this was a bump in the road, or a fork in the road,” He said. “We’ll have the same coaches and the same amount of money to recruit with. I have every reason to think that we’ll get back to being re spectable again, but talk is cheap. We have to make it happen. ” Tom Heinonen has led the Oregon women to three NCAA titles and nine Pac-10 Con ference titles in his 24-year career with the Ducks. Track continued from page 11A heave. “Place-wise, I did OK,” Etter said in a released statement. “But I was a little disappointed with the distance because I was shoot ing for an Olympic Trials qualify ing mark of 175-6.'’ Fein missed advancing to the finals by .19 seconds, edged by Illinois State’s Christian Goy in the final kick. South Alabama’s David Ki mani won the first of two heats in 3:44.70. Stanford’s Gabe Jennings won the second heat with a time of 3:43.18. Fein receiyed All-American honors because his time ranks among the top eight American finishers. Out of the 12 athletes advancing to the men’s 1,500 fi nals, five were from out of the country. “I’ll move off this just like I would any race, good or bad, and go back to training,” Fein said. “My workouts have been going well coming in so we’re on pace to accomplish our goals in the 5,000 at the Olympic Trials [in July].” Crabb took control of the pace late in the women’s 1,500, but it was Villanova’s Carmen Douma who won the heat in 4:19.26. Rice’s Shaquandra Roberson won the second heat in 4:20.46. Two more Ducks begin action in today’s NCAA competition. Santiago Lorenzo competes in day one of the decathlon, and two-time All-American Niki Reed will try to add a third honor in the women’s pole vault.
