J Limbaugh would help ABC For the past week or so. ru mors have been floating around that Rush Lim baugh may be the next co host for Al Michaels on Monday Night Football. For ABC, this is probably one of the best moves since it made “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” a regular show. While many people won’t want to hear some right-wing conservative for three to four hours every week, Limbaugh will, if nothing else, boost the sagging Nielson ratings of MNF. It will be another ploy in the re cent efforts by the network to save the 30-year-old American staple. Along with the rumored Limbaugh addition, ABC has brought back producer Don Ohlmeyer, who ran the show dur ing the Howard Cosell and Don Meredith days. When Meredith and Cosell were in the booth, MNF had its most success and experienced its highest popularity. Mainly be cause people either loved or hat ed Cosell. But either way, America tuned in every Monday night just to hear Cosell for four hours. He made MNF what it is today. What’s most important for ABC right now is to get that kind of fan interest again. In the last five years, MNF has gone through nu merous line-up changes. The trio of Al Michaels, Dan Dierdorf, and Frank uinora, wno worked tne broadcasts for 10 years from 1987-1997, got a facelift when Gifford stepped down. ABC re placed Gifford with the lame duck Boomer Eiasion. With ratings continuing to spi ral downward, the network knew it needed to revamp the play-by play booth yet again. This time it let Dierdorf go and went with Michaels and Eiasion, a lame duo at the very least. So in another attempt to save the sinking ship, ABC cut Eiasion loose and is now in the middle of a search for someone to team up with Michaels. While ABC has neither con firmed its interest in Limbaugh nor his re ported re cent audition, it would be one of the network’s smarter moves to hire him next season. Limbaugh has his own daily talk show on AM radio in which he spends most of his time ranti ng and raving about the democ rats and the Clinton administra tion. You would think that Rush and sports do not go together and that he has no business in a play-by Matt O’Neill play Doom oi a nationally broad cast football game. But that is where you are wrong. Limbaugh has a connection to sports and to America in general. He was the public relations man for the Kansas City Royals in the 1980s and is an avid sports fan. He also has a huge following across the United States and would draw a lot of people into watching MNF again. His die-hard followers would tune in to get more Limbaugh and the people who dislike him would tune in to see him fail or to make fun of him, much like I do with Bill Walton on the NBC and TNT broadcasts of the NBA games. And even the average fans who don’t care one way or another would watch just because he is who he is. He would have the kind of draw that only Cosell had in the 1970s, which is what the network wants. Although Limbaugh said he is not trying to be another Cosell, he will be — at least for a while. Either way, Limbaugh would do what ABC wants. Get ratings. Matt O’Neill is a sports reporter for the Oregon Daily Emerald. His views do not necessarily represent those of the Emerald.
