Then Lindsey Welch put down an amazing bunt that somehow rolled all the way to the left field grass, scoring one to tie the game up. Robinson went all the way to third on the play, and Welch was given a rare bunt double. But that was all Blades would allow. The hurler dug down deep and struck out Triawn Custer and Andrea Vidlund back-to-back, and got Holly Ray to ground out to end the threat. The Ducks had one more chance in the seventh when the always dangerous Robinson came to the plate with two runners on and two outs. Blades won the bat tle, however, and got Robinson to go down on strikes. “I thought that the game was decided in the bottom of the sixth inning,” Oregon head coach Rick Gamez said. “We had opportuni ties to score and to win the game. In fact, I think that we should have won the game today.” The Golden Eagles clinched the victory in the eighth when they scored off of an RBI single and a walk. Despite the tough defeat and end to their season, Gamez is ex tremely proud of the way his team battled back and competed all weekend. In Friday’s win, Oregon con nected for eight hits and scored runs in the second, third and sixth innings to eliminate North western St. The win set up a match-up with hometown favorite ULL. The game was tied at 3-3 until Andrea Gustafson drove in what proved to be the winning run in the fifth. “I want to commend my team for their effort,” Gamez said. “They played extremely hard this weekend. They never gave up to day, from the first pitch all the way to the very last pitch.” One can only wonder how far the Ducks could have gone had those pitches been delivered by someone other than Blades. Men continued from page 9 meters to go. The Cardinal re sponded, matching Fein stride for stride, as the two ran into the final turn. And then it was all Hauser. The Stanford distance runner unleashed a blistering kick to win with a time of 13 minutes, 56.40 seconds. But it was Fein’s per formance on Sunday that left the Oregon men’s track and field team’s final mark on its seventh place finish in the two-day Pacif ic-10 Conference Championships. The Trojans won the Pac-10 team title with 154 points. “Based on our total team pro duction, in many ways we maxi mized a lot of the work we could do,” Oregon head coach Martin Smith said. The Ducks finished with 71 points, trailing Arizona (75) and UCLA and Washington (tied with 83). Sophomore Jason Boness won the Pac-10 title in the high jump. “We had a lot of people do a lot of good things,” Smith said. “I’m really pleased with them. Now we just keep working hard and build off that.” Fein’s time of 13:58.06 earned him an NCAA provisional mark, but he doesn’t expect to make the final cut. He will compete at the NCAA meet in the 1,500 with the sub-4:00 mark he earned in last Saturday’s Oregon Twilight mile. “Unfortunately we didn’t come away with the win,” Fein said. “I thought it was a good race. I matched every move, and it was a close last lap, other than the last 100 meters. At this point, I know there is a lot more work I need to do.” Shortly before Fein’s gutsy race, Boness took center stage by win ning the high jump. The decisive 0089971 SWING INTO SPRING! Then Boness had a shot to break the Oregon record by clear ing 7-5. He did it on his second at tempt. His record mark is a per sonal best, an NCAA qualifier and an Olympic Trials qualifier. “Earlier this week I predicted that I was going to jump higher than I ever had before, and it turns out that I did,” Boness said. “It’s great jumping at home, I love the crowd.” Nat Johnson started the Pac-lOs off on a good note by taking sec ond place in the long jump. In what could be his final collegiate meet of the season, Johnson im proved his personal best on each of his four fair jumps, setting fi nally at 25-3 1/2 on his fifth at tempt. Johnson also competed in the triple jump, 4xl00-meter relay and 4x400. “I was relieved — I’ve been waiting for this for a long time,” Johnson said. “I did what I ex OFF Any Yogurt (‘Except small cones and tinies.
