Men's golf coming together at just the right tinie ■ The men’s golf team will use a blend of talent and chemistry to compete at the Western Intercollegiate beginning today in Santa Cruz By Peter Hockaday for the Emerald You might not believe it, but there is a need for team chem istry in college golf. The Oregon men’s golf team has found that chemistry, and all of a sudden the NCAA Championships are in sight. The Ducks are in Santa Cruz, Calif., today for the start of the Western Intercollegiate, the team’s second to last tourna ment before postseason play be gins at the Pacific-10 Champi onships April 24-26. The Ducks start the same lineup that placed second over all at the Oregon Duck Invita tional two weeks ago. Four players in the Ducks’ Western Intercollegiate lineup were re sponsible for a third place fin ish at the Cleveland Southwest ern Intercollegiate last month. The oil that’s greasing the Ore gon engine seems to be junior T.J. Duncan. A native of Carson City, Nev., Duncan placed eighth at the Southwestern and fifth at the Duck Invitational. His previous best was a 21st place finish at the Pacific Invitational in September. Duncan’s improved play has helped the Ducks in their quest for consistency. Senior co-cap tains Ryan Lavoie and Andrew Tredway have been playing well all year, but have struggled to keep Oregon in tournaments by themselves. Duncan is the third piece to Lavoie and Tred way’s puzzle, and he has made the difference in the Ducks’ last two tourna ments. San Jose State’s West ern Intercol legiate is the perfect tour nament to test the differ ence in the Ducks’ new lineup. The field boasts four top-20 teams and a multitude of other strong schools. The site of the tournament, The Pasatiempo jolf Course, is one of Golf Di gest’s top 100 American courses. The two schools Oregon couldn’t beat at the Southwest Intercollegiate last month — No. 3 Brigham Young and No. 16 Arizona State — will compete at the Western Intercollegiate. Also playing are No. 7 Fresno State, No. 14 Stanford and No. 16 Southern California. Oregon is currently ranked 28th. The 54-hole tournament be gins today with two 18-hole rounds and concludes tomor row with the final 18-hole round. Wallace sets single-season record; L.A. wins again PORTLAND (AP) — Rasheed Wallace earned two technical fouls milliseconds apart and an automatic ejection Sunday night, setting an NBA record for techni cal fouls in a season. Wallace received his 33rd and 34th technical fouls with 10:37 left in the second quarter against the Seattle SuperSonics. That’s the most since the league began keeping statistics on technical fouls in 1961. Wallace surpassed the old mark of 32 technicals by Charles Barkley in 1992-93 and 1994-95 with Phoenix, and tied by Dennis Rod man in 1993-94 with San Antonio. Wallace has been ejected six times this season. He was in the low post against Seattle’s Vin Bak er when he turned and put up a shot that fell short. Teammate Bri an Grant grabbed the offensive re bound and was fouled, but Wal lace flew into a rage, complaining he was fouled. Wallace got in the face of the nearest official, Joey Crawford, and sparks flew. Wallace began screaming at Crawford and flail ing his arms, and Crawford imme diately called two technicals in succession, resulting in an auto matic ejection. Lakers win wild one, 106-82 LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Knicks-Lakers game got down right nasty. A fight between Kobe Bryant and Chris Childs detract ed from another dominant per formance by O’Neal, who scored 24 of his 34 points in the first half as Los Angeles took command early Sunday in rolling to a 106 82 victory over New York. The win was the ninth straight and 28th in 29 games for the Lak ers (62-12), who reduced their magic number for clinching the NBA’s best record to two. O’Neal also had 12 rebounds, four assists and five blocks. Bryant and Childs were ejected following an exchange of punches with 43.4 seconds left in the third quarter and the Lakers leading 71 60. Both players face automatic suspensions for throwing punches. Bryant didn’t speak to reporters afterward, while Childs said he was just defending himself.
