Softball continued from page 9 “This year we’re working on the short game, in the past we’ve been known as a home run-hitting team,” Robinson said. “To play in the Pac-10 you need the overall hitting game, you need the short game, you need the long ball, you need consistency.” Gamez agrees his senior’s state ments. “We need to get more from the middle and the bottom of our lineup,” Gamez said. “We need to take advantage of every opportu nity.” Many of the Ducks have be come consistent hitters this sea son. Colistro was getting her tennis career back on track after a tumultuous fresh man year. After winning her first three Pa cific-10 conference matches, she tore her hamstring and was forced to redshirt the year. Colistro then had a successful redshirt fresh men season, compiling a 10-10 record. This season, Colistro was 6-6 in singles play and teamed with freshman Monika Gieczys for Oregon’s top doubles tandem. Juppenlatz’ career was off to a promising start. The 1999 Oregon Prep tennis player of the year was Gustafson is batting .380 with 25 RBIs and is second on the team with seven doubles. “Offensively we have been im proving,” Gamez said. “Jill and Andrea Gustafson are hitting the ball very well.” One of the biggest tests for the potency of the Ducks’ bats will be Sun Devils’ pitcher Kristen Voak, who boasts a record of 21-2. The sophomore is coming off a 12 strike-out performance against UNLV, giving her 181 on the year. Oregon’s three pitchers, Con nie McMurren, Danielle Haag and freshman Andrea Vidlund will all have to pitch some of their finest balls against these two high-pow ered offenses. McMurren is coming off a week which saw her throw four com plete games, striking 21 and al one of head coach Jack Griffin’s most prized recruits. Juppenlatz started the season with a 5-5 record at the No. 4 singles posi tion. “It took us a couple matches to get used to the new lineup,” Grif fin said. “This has been quite a challenge for us.” Oregon will have to put these distractions aside as the Ducks travel to Pullman, Wash., to take on Washington State (8-7,0-3 Pac 10). On March 5, the Cougars handed No. 42 Oregon its tough est loss of the season. After lead ing the match 4-2, the Ducks fell apart in doubles play, losing all three matches and falling 5-4 to Washington State. Freshman shortstop Kara Brun is coming off a three-game series where she hit safely in all three games, hitting .500 with a double and two runs scored. Oregon still has two significant injuries. Sophomore lead-off hit ter Tia Dumas is nursing a knee injury and is day-to-day, while freshman Alyssa Laux came back , two weeks ago from a torn liga ment in her foot. Burrows was Washington State’s No. 4 singles player and teamed with Patrycja Gajdzik for the top doubles position. Terms of the dismissal were not dis closed. Washington will provide much tougher competition than the Cougars. The Huskies’ lineup in cludes the nations top-ranked player, Kristina Kraszewski, who burned senior captain Alina Wygonowska earlier this season. .
