It will go down as one of the
biggest games in Oregon women’s
tennis history.
The Ducks’ hard-fought, 5-3
win against No. 21 Arizona was
the first win by a Northwest team
over a southern Pacific-10 Confer
ence school in history.
“We continued to fight hard
and it paid off,” head coach Jack
Griffin said.
Oregon picked up it’s first Pac
10 victory of the season and im
proved its overall record to 4-5.
The Wildcats were the sixth
ranked opponent the Ducks have
faced this season.
Oregon was in a hole early as
the Ducks’ top two players, senior
Alina Wygonowska and freshman
Monika Gieczys, fell in straight
sets. Oregon then showed its
depth as it responded with four
singles victories. Sophomore
Sarah Colistro dominated Ari
zona’s Joanna Buczowska, 6-0, 6
2. Sophomores Adeline Arnaud
and Janice Nyland both earned
three-set victories.
With Oregon leading 4-2, and
with three doubles matches re
maining, the Ducks needed just
one win to seal the victory. Ari
zona would need to take all three
doubles.
Wygonowska and walk-on
Jeannette Mattson put the last nail
in the coffin, sweeping Brooke
Taylor and Siri Formsgaard, 8-0.
“They showed great spirit and
played smart,” Griffin said. “This
is a great win for us. ”
Wygonowska’s doubles win
capped what was a big weekend
for her. On Saturday, the senior
captain picked up Oregon’s lone
win against No. 8 Arizona State.
Fourteenth-ranked Allison Brad
shaw, who had earlier knocked off
the top-ranked player in the na
tion, lost to Wygonowska, 5-7, 6
2,6-4.
The Sun Devils won the re
mainder of singles matches. Offi
cials decided to forego the dou
bles matches because the game
had already been decided. Final
score: 5-1, Arizona State.
Oregon warmed up for the
desert schools with a non-confer
ence match up with Montana on
Friday. The Grizzlies proved to be
no match for the No. 40‘Ducks,
who won all their matches in
straight sets, ^dropping only nine
games all evening.
“We went out, hit a fair amount
of balls and some people who
haven’t played as much got some
action,” Griffin said.
Freshman Amy Juppenlatz re
turned from a foot injury that kept
her on the sidelines for over a
month. Juppenlatz teamed with
Nyland for a doubles win against
Montana and a tough loss against
Arizona.
Freshman Lisa Cummings saw
her first dual-match action of the
season, defeating Jelena Petrovic,
6-0,6-1. With two wins last week
end, Arnaud improved her over
all record to 10-5, the best of any
Duck.
Oregon takes a break from Pac
10 play this week. Unranked St.
Mary’s comes to town next Sun
day. Action begins at 1 p.m. at the
Willow Creek Racquet Club.
The Oregon men had less luck
in the Bay Area, but were high
lighted by several individual per
formances.
Senior Guillermo Carter picked
up the biggest wins in his long
Oregon career against No. 2 Stan
ford. Carter teamed with freshman
Leslie Eisinga to knock off the No.
1 doubles team of Alex Kim and
Geoff Abrams, 8-6. Carter re
turned in singles play to give
Abrams more trouble. Carter Beat
the No. 6 player in the nation in
straight sets, 7-6,6-4.
Carter’s wins were the lone
bright spots for the Ducks, as the
Cardinal prevailed, 6-1.
“There were some outstanding
individual performances in the
top singles and doubles matches,”
head coach Chris Russell said in a
released statement. “The win by
‘Memo was one of the best wins in
the program’s history, and a huge
win for him as an individual. Both
‘Memo and Leslie deserve a lot of
credit for their work today in the
doubles match.”
On Friday, Oregon opened up
Pac-10 play against California in
Berkeley. The Ducks eventually
lost to the Bears', 5-2.
Sophomore Thomas Schneiter
knocked off Cal’s top singles play

straight sets, defeating Robert
Kowalczyk, 6-3,6-4.
