Tennis teams make history with upset wins ■ Seniors Alina Wygonowska and Guillermo Carter lead Oregon’s tennis teams By Robbie McCallum for the Emerald It will go down as one of the biggest games in Oregon women’s tennis history. The Ducks’ hard-fought, 5-3 win against No. 21 Arizona was the first win by a Northwest team over a southern Pacific-10 Confer ence school in history. “We continued to fight hard and it paid off,” head coach Jack Griffin said. Oregon picked up it’s first Pac 10 victory of the season and im proved its overall record to 4-5. The Wildcats were the sixth ranked opponent the Ducks have faced this season. Oregon was in a hole early as the Ducks’ top two players, senior Alina Wygonowska and freshman Monika Gieczys, fell in straight sets. Oregon then showed its depth as it responded with four singles victories. Sophomore Sarah Colistro dominated Ari zona’s Joanna Buczowska, 6-0, 6 2. Sophomores Adeline Arnaud and Janice Nyland both earned three-set victories. With Oregon leading 4-2, and with three doubles matches re maining, the Ducks needed just one win to seal the victory. Ari zona would need to take all three doubles. Wygonowska and walk-on Jeannette Mattson put the last nail in the coffin, sweeping Brooke Taylor and Siri Formsgaard, 8-0. “They showed great spirit and played smart,” Griffin said. “This is a great win for us. ” Wygonowska’s doubles win capped what was a big weekend for her. On Saturday, the senior captain picked up Oregon’s lone win against No. 8 Arizona State. Fourteenth-ranked Allison Brad shaw, who had earlier knocked off the top-ranked player in the na tion, lost to Wygonowska, 5-7, 6 2,6-4. The Sun Devils won the re mainder of singles matches. Offi cials decided to forego the dou bles matches because the game had already been decided. Final score: 5-1, Arizona State. Oregon warmed up for the desert schools with a non-confer ence match up with Montana on Friday. The Grizzlies proved to be no match for the No. 40‘Ducks, who won all their matches in straight sets, ^dropping only nine games all evening. “We went out, hit a fair amount of balls and some people who haven’t played as much got some action,” Griffin said. Freshman Amy Juppenlatz re turned from a foot injury that kept her on the sidelines for over a month. Juppenlatz teamed with Nyland for a doubles win against Montana and a tough loss against Arizona. Freshman Lisa Cummings saw her first dual-match action of the season, defeating Jelena Petrovic, 6-0,6-1. With two wins last week end, Arnaud improved her over all record to 10-5, the best of any Duck. Oregon takes a break from Pac 10 play this week. Unranked St. Mary’s comes to town next Sun day. Action begins at 1 p.m. at the Willow Creek Racquet Club. The Oregon men had less luck in the Bay Area, but were high lighted by several individual per formances. Senior Guillermo Carter picked up the biggest wins in his long Oregon career against No. 2 Stan ford. Carter teamed with freshman Leslie Eisinga to knock off the No. 1 doubles team of Alex Kim and Geoff Abrams, 8-6. Carter re turned in singles play to give Abrams more trouble. Carter Beat the No. 6 player in the nation in straight sets, 7-6,6-4. Carter’s wins were the lone bright spots for the Ducks, as the Cardinal prevailed, 6-1. “There were some outstanding individual performances in the top singles and doubles matches,” head coach Chris Russell said in a released statement. “The win by ‘Memo was one of the best wins in the program’s history, and a huge win for him as an individual. Both ‘Memo and Leslie deserve a lot of credit for their work today in the doubles match.” On Friday, Oregon opened up Pac-10 play against California in Berkeley. The Ducks eventually lost to the Bears', 5-2. Sophomore Thomas Schneiter knocked off Cal’s top singles play er, John Paul Fruttero, 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Oded Teig also won in straight sets, defeating Robert Kowalczyk, 6-3,6-4. Senior Joaquin Hamdan and junior David Becker teamed for a hard-fought doubles win against David Tzou apd Chris Lewis. St. Mary’s takes on Oregon on Friday in Portland and Oregon plays its home opener Saturday against Loyola Marymount.
