Oregon tennis gives LA. teams a scare ■ The women’s tennis team performs admirably against tough competition By Robbie McCallum for the Emerald They were pushed to the brink of defeat. But in the end, the Los Angeles-area schools were too tal ented for the Oregon women’s ten nis team. The Ducks put forth their best efforts of the season but fell to UCLA and Southern California. The Ducks were in a hole early as No. 8 UCLA’s (3-2) top two play ers beat Oregon’s Alina Wygonowska and Monika Gieczys in straight sets. The Ducks earned their first point when the Bruins’ Zana Zleb nick retired in her match against sophomore Adeline Arnaud. Ore gon and UCLA continued to ex change blows, as sophomore Sarah Colistro dominated Jennifer Donahue 6-0,6-0. The pressure fell on sophomore Janice Nyland. The Duck lost a tough opening set to Elizibeth Schmidt, 5-7 but stormed back to take the second set, 6-4. With the entire Oregon squad rallying beside her, Nyland disposed of Schmidt, 6 1, and she tied the contest, 3-3. Doubles matches were the Ducks’ downfall, as UCLA won two of the three. Oregon had to forget the 5-4 loss and focus on Saturday’s opponent: No. 12 Southern California. Four Ducks played three-set matches that came down to the final point. But the Women of Troy won three of the four to clinch the victory. Geiczys lost a heartbreaking three-set match to No. 4 Jewel Peterson. Colistro fell to No. 71 Anita Loyola. Valerie Young lost to Tiffany Brymer. Senior Alina Wygonowska earned the Ducks’ lone singles win. After losing the first set, Wygonowska won 6-1,7-6(3).
