FIND THINGS IN ODE CLASSIFIEDS (ROOMMATES, TICKETS, STUFF YOU LOST, BICYCLES, CARS, JOBS, ON-CAMPUS OPPORTUNITIES) Senate continued from page 1A ASUO Executive a position it had been fighting to reinstate for the past few weeks. ASUO President Wylie Chen and Vice President Mitra Anoushiravani appealed to the senate for over an hour, but in the end it voted down the position by a 6 to 10 vote with one senator ab staining. The Programs Finance Commit tee rejected allocating the money for the new position at the Execu tive’s PFC hearing and in the PFC appeals process. The purpose of the position, which has existed in previous years, would be to research ques tions regarding ASUO rules, help the process of appointing new people to student government and have the general ability to an swer questions regarding the ASUO. Anoushiravani said the lack of the position this year has made her and Chen’s job much more difficult because of the extra work they’ve done researching rules and cutting through red tape. “The future of the ASUO is in jeopardy,” Anoushiravani said. “This position will benefit every one in student government.” She said the coordinator would have helped greatly earlier this year when the ASUO struggled with how to fund groups such as Pro ject Saferide, the Oregon March ing Band and Students For Choice. But many senators questioned whether the money was worth spending or how much the posi tion would help the ASUO. Sen. Michael Dixon disagreed with Anoushiravani’s description of the ASUO and the dire need to have the position. “Student government is not a TWA plane going down and crashing. I speak against the posi tion,” Dixon said. Sen. Helen Stocklin-Enright, who is also a part of the PFC, urged senators to look at the ASUO’s request just like any other group and not give it special treat ment. But those who supported fund ing the position thought it was ex tremely important to student gov ernment and the student body. “Some groups are nice and ger mane, but the ASUO is vital,” Sen. Lindsey McLean said. The senate also approved next year’s budgets for the Athletic De partment Finance Committee and the PFC, but it sent the EMU’s budget back to the EMU Board without approval. The Senate strongly opposed the EMU’s proposed $5000 cut in student wages for a new classified staff position. Many said they would approve the rest of the budget if money wasn’t being tak en away for that position. The EMU will return with an updated budget next week. Before the budget hearings be gan, the senate confirmed new ASUO Constitution Court Justice Ahsan Awan. The court is once again full, although Justice Jeremy Gibons will be graduating and leaving the court soon. 500Additional Minutes! Now get more talk time, without paying more.
