Valentine’s Day comes around once a year, and every year proposes another challenge to find the best place to eat, pick out the perfect gift, decide what flowers to give and settle on where to take that special someone. From a quiet, relaxing evening at home, to an elegant night of dinner and dancing, to a romantic trip to the beach, many University students are finding ways to work around midterms to share this holiday with the ones they love, Robyn Hamilton, a junior and business ma jor, said that last year’s Valentine’s Day, spent last year with her boyfriend Ryan Wians, also a junior and busi ness major, was memorable. “Ryan took me to the beach — it was so romantic,” she said. A romantic trip to the beach isn’t on your agenda? Well, Eugene has several romantic hot spots to make this holiday spe cial. Dinner and flowers are most popular on Valentine’s Day, if in-store specials and restaurant crowds are any indication. For dinner, Eugene offers many romantic restaurants that can please just about any palate. Ambrosia, located in downtown Eugene, serves up fine Italian cuisine for sweethearts, while Montage, a new restaurant in town that serves Cajun-style food, will also be open for business on Valentine’s Day. Many restaurants in the area are already starting to take reservations for Valentine’s Day, an employee at Ambrosia said. “Couples need to start making reservations now; the sooner the better,” Rob Hill suggested. Flowers are a nice touch for anyone wanti ng to make a good impression this Valentine’s Day. The most popular bouquet, a dozen ros es, runs between $65-$79 at various florists. Those businesses are also preparing for next Monday’s rush. “We always have a lot of people walk in on Valentine’s Day to order bouquets, but I would recommend ordering them two to three days in advance,” says Cheryl Cauthon, owner of RainyDay Florist. Want to spend the night away from home? The Hilton Eugene is offering special pack ages for sweethearts starting at $99. The pack age includes a room for the night of Feb. 14, a long-stemmed rose, a box of chocolates and a romantic breakfast for two at the Big River Restaurant that sits atop the hotel. Going out on Valentine’s Day might not provide enough romance, so some couples have decided to stay home. Garret Goetzinger, a sophomore pre-busi ness administration major, and his girlfriend of eight months, Karina Bushholtz, a sopho more landscape architecture major, plan on staying in for the evening. “I am going to cook dinner for Karina,” Goetzinger says. “Then we will probably go out for dessert,” Bushholtz adds.
