Oregon kicks off season with wins ■ The Ducks split up for season opening invitationals in San Diego, Iowa and Eugene By Robbie McCallum for the Emerald Spread across the country, the Oregon track team kicked off the 2000 Indoor Track season. In San Diego, senior Marie Davis opened her final season of eligibility with an NCAA provi sional qualifying mark in the mile. Her time of 4 minutes 47.6 sec onds placed her third overall, and first among collegians. The bulk of the men’s team trav eled to Ames, Iowa for the annual Iowa State Open. Three distance runners high lighted the Ducks’ efforts. Junior Adam Bergquist was third in the mile (4:12.3). Sophomore Ross Krempley was third in the 800 me ters (1:51.9) and freshman Jason Hartman was third in the 5,000 meters (14:47.9). Freshman Michael Kasahun placed sixth in the 3,000 meters in 8:24.2. In field events, junior Kyley Johnson placed fourth in the high jump with liis indoor best of 6 feet, 11 inches. Sophomore Cody Howell tied for fourth. In the triple jump, freshman Fo luso Akinradewo was sixth (48-5 Volleyball brief Ferreira accepts head volleyball coach position Carl Ferreira, coach at the Uni versity of Idaho for the past three seasons, has taken the job as Ore gon’s new head volleyball coach, the Register-Guard reported. Sophomore pole vaulter Nikki Reed qualified provisionally for the NCAA Indoor Championships with her win in the pole vault. The Ducks won 11 of the 12 events. Winners included sopho more Lucretia Larkin in the 50 me ter hurdles (7.89), junior Kylee Wells in the 1,500 meters (4:56.0), senior Lisa Jansen in the 3,000 me ters (10:47.3), and freshman Jenny Brogdon in the high jump (5-4 1/2). Senior Maureen Morrison won the weight throw in 58-2 1/2 and was second in the shot put to teammate, freshman Mary Etter. Redshirt freshman James March won the shot put in 49-2. Freshman Jason Krantz placed fourth in the 50-meter dash in 6.29.Oregon returns to action next Saturday for the Silver State Invitational in Reno, Nevada. “We’re very excited to have him,” athletic director, Bill Moos said. “I think the future of our vol leyball program is in very good hands." In the Big West Conference, Ferreira posted a 48-43 record at Idaho. As head coach at Cal State Bakersfield, he took his teams to national Division II tournament finishes of second, third and fifth place. He replaces Cathy Nelson, who resigned from the head coach po sition last November.
