Best Bet NBA Denver vs. Lakers 7:30 p.m., TBS Ducks start fast, pelt Beavers on road ■ Oregon jumps out to a 21-4 lead to cruise to an easy 67-49, Pac-10 opening win By Tim Pyle Oregon Daily Emerald CORVALLIS — Consider revenge taken. And tack on an exclama tion point. In winning its 12th Civil War in the last 13 meetings Saturday night, the Oregon men’s basketball team not only exacted payback for last season’s ugly loss at Ore gon State and began the Pa cific-10 Conference season on the right note. The Ducks (10-2 overall, 1-0 Pac-10) also made a statement with a 67-49 vic tory that wasn’t even as close as the final score indi cates. “We’re a very good basket ball team that is just starting to come together,” said head coach Ernie Kent, who im proved to 4-1 in his coach ing career against the Beavers (8-4, 0-1). “For 40 minutes, it was one of the better basketball games that my program has played in terms of the mental aspect since I’ve been here. ” Spurred by two three pointers from sophomore guard Freddie Jones, Oregon put eight points on the board before Oregon State scored its first basket. And another three by Jones, along with treys from senior point guard Darius Wright and senior forward A.D. Smith, gave the Ducks a 21-4 lead about nine minutes into what was supposed to be a close, hotly-contested battle. After going head to-head with some of the best wrestling programs in the nation, Oregon wel comed matches last week end against Portland State and Simon Fraser. The end result was the Ducks’ domination against both squads, first in a 31-6 victory against the Vikings on Saturday and then in a 50-3 rout over the Clan on Sunday at McArthur Court. Oregon head coach Chuck Kearney said he was happy about the direction that he sees his program go ing following the two im pressive wins last weekend. l ieei gooa aouui nuw we played this weekend,” said Kearney in his second season as head coach. “We went out aggressive and went for the fall. Sometimes after a month like last month, we need a weekend like this to give us confi dence. This also gave our young wrestlers a chance to dominate.” Simon Fraser simply did n’t have the talent to score points against the Ducks. After the first six matches, Oregon had pinned four Clan wrestlers and won two matches by forfeit to take a commanding 36-0 lead. Eugene Harris added to the lead in an 8-3 decision over Simon Fraser’s Jeremy Andrew and Leif Williams won in a technical fall be fore the Clan scored its first points. Then Oregon added six more points when Doug Lee pinned James Messen ger for the final score.
