Smith remembers Jan. 30,1999, well. But the Oregon men’s bas ketball team’s leading scorer doesn’t recall it fondly. That night, the Ducks lost their fourth straight Pacific 10 Conference game on their way to a 2-7 mark in the first half of the conference sea son. Worse, the 48-45 defeat came at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, at the hands of Oregon State and a rowdy, predominately orange-and black-laden crowd of 10,400. As Oregon (9-2 overall) prepares to face the Beavers (8-3) in the Pac-10 opener for both teams at 7:05 p.m. Sat urday night in Gill Colise um, Smith and the Ducks have one thing in mind. Payback. “They’re tough at home,” said Smith, a senior forward who is a team co-captain along with fellow seniors Darius Wright and Alex Scales. “And it was the first year in a while they beat us there, so we feel like we have a little payback to give to them. “And we feel like we have one of the better teams in the Pac-10 and should finish high up there and should Turn to Basketball, page 12A On tap What: Men’s basetball Who: Oregon (9-2) vs. Oregon State (8-3) When: Satur day, 7:05p.m. Where: Gill Coliseum in Corvallis TV: FoxSports Northwest It was thefirst year in a while they beat us there, so we feel like we have a little pay back to give to them, yy A.D.Smith Oregon forward Ducks ready to start Pac-10 play with a bang On tap What: Women’s basketball Who: Oregon (9-3 overall) vs. Oregon State (4-8) When: Saturday, 1 p.m. Where: Gill Colise um in Corvallis TV: FoxSports Northwest ■ Oregon intends to take advantage of its fan support against Otegon State Saturday By Mil-jam Swanson Oregon Daily Emerald The people at Gill Colise um have developed a spe cial, one-time deal for Ore gon State fans in honor of Saturday’s Civil War dou ble header, which is the Pa cific-10 Conference opener for all four teams involved. Purchasing a reserved ticket to the men’s game at 7:05 p.m. secures a spot in a reserved seat for the women’s contest earlier at 1 p.m. — for free. In other words, the Beavers (4-8 overall) don’t want what happened last season to happen Saturday. Last February, at least 4,000 of the 5,034 who attended the last Civil War of the sea son where decked out in green and yellow, whoop ing and hollering for their Ducks and thus drowning out any Beaver support in helping Oregon to a 60-52 win. It was, more or less, McArthur Court on the road. “We’re excited to be home even though we’re playing at Beaverland,” Oregon head coach Jody Runge said. “We’re excited to get back in front of our crowd.” Because the road weary Ducks — heading into their eighth of ten straight away games — can’t be at home, Corvallis is the next best place. And because Oregon (9-3) is searching for a way to add some attitude to their game, then there is no spot better than Gill to find the necessary inspiration to be a little thuggish. “This is a definite state ment game,” point guard Shaquala Williams said. “One, it’s our first Pac-10 game. Two, we’ve been struggling so we need a big game. Three, it’s a rival game. We don’t just want to win, we want to destroy them. We want to crush them. And they’re in the Turn to Women, page 12A junior center Jenny Mowe and in their Pac-10 opener Saturday. Jeffrey Stockton Emerald Ducks look to get physical
