Wrestlers search for consistency ■ Oregon wrestling endures a series of ups and downs during winter break competition By Brett Williams Oregon Daily Emerald It was the holiday season for many, but the Oregon wrestling team hardly took a break last month. The Ducks spent much of December and early January practicing and participating in two dual matches, as well as two tournaments. Oregon (2-1 Pacific-10 Confer ence, 2-2 overall) opened the break with back-to-back losses, first to Pac-10 foe Cal-State Bakers field 24-13 on Dec. 11 and then to fourth-ranked Oklahoma State 33 9 on Dec. 16. The Ducks placed eighth out of twelve teams in the Tournament of Champions held in Reno, Nev., on Dec. 19, and most recently had four wrestlers place among the top five at the Great Plains Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., on Jan. 2. Oregon head coach Chuck Kear ney said the tough competition that the Ducks faced during the last month will make his team that much stronger in the long run. “When we scheduled last month, we saw we were going up against some of the premier guys in the country,” said Kearney, who was a former NCAA All-American at Ore gon. “We know who we have to compete against to get better. ” The Ducks had an impressive showing at the Great Plains Invita tional. Junior Doug Lee continued his brilliance this season, earning a bid to the championship match at 184 pounds before losing to Ne braska’s Charles McTorry for the second time this season. At the Tournament of Champi ons, Oregon was unable to bring home any individual hon ors. Lee lost in the champi onship round, and freshman Tony Overstake and sophomore Eugene Harris bowed out in the semifinals. Despite the fact that only Lee and Harris were able to muster wins against Oklahoma State, Kearney was happy with the Ducks’ performance considering the abundance of talent on the Sooners’ squad. Against the Roadrunners, how ever, Kearney said Oregon’s youth was evident. “We have a young group, and sometimes there are going to be lumps,” Kearney said. “The Cal State match was winnable, but a couple of freshmen just hadn’t ar rived yet.” Harris said that although the team may be young, there is no need for panic at this point in the season. un Bring your textbook information to Smith Family Bookstore • Author Sell us those texts, paperbacks & magazines you no longer use.
