Check your UO alumus has high hopes for film Production for the independent film Jacks’ begins this summer By Maggie Young Oregon Daily Emerald A spotlight will soon shine on the rainy city of Eugene. On June 27, production for an independent film will begin in Eu gene through University alumus Jessie Lawler — the writer and producer behind this venture. The movie entitled “Jacks” is a college coming of age story, Lawlar said. “I wanted to write about what I know,” he said. “I know about college and I draw from my own experiences. I wouldn’t be able to write a movie about cops and rob bers because I don’t know about them. I wrote the role with certain actors in mind.” The plot, which centers around a group of students and a high stakes card game should appeal to many, said movie lead Hans Hlawaty, junior music major. “This is a hip package,” Hlawaty said. “It’s funny and a good mix of things you can relate to.” This will be the first large ven ture for Lawler. He previously produced a detective movie “Tumbler” which played at the Bijou. The goals for this movie are much higher though. The goal is to get it to several film festivals and hopefully bought by a studio. “This is a stepping stone film,” Lawler said. “It is the first movie I am making with the goal of turn ing a profit.” Lack of dependence on support from Hollywood is important in this project, he said. “I want to make the best movie that I can without any Hollywood connections,” Lawler said. “I had to think about the logistics and what resources I have available.” Overall, there is one quality that makes this film unique, Hlawaty said. “Independent films are hot right now,” Hlawaty said. “But what makes this movie different is that it is being produced in Ore gon by students who are mobi lized without any big contacts in Hollywood. You don’t find that often.” Casting for the film was com pleted six weeks ago. The majori ty of the cast and crew are made up of University students. The main roles in the film also went to students. “I decided to cast people from the school because many of my good friends are U of O students,” Lawler said. “Both my business and social circles are centered here.” The fact that production is hap pening in the summer is not slow ing it down, he said. “Some people are altering their summer plans and changing their job schedules,” he said. “People are taking this seriously.” The reward for this dedication will be delayed for much of the cast and crew. Most have opted to defer payment up front for a cut of the profits later. Two elements were key in sup plying the current $80,000 budget for the film. The profits from Lawler’s Crazy Production Com pany were placed in the cash pot. Also, a number of private parties made donations to the cause. These contributions ranged from $5,000 to $25,000 each. The production has also been boosted by support from the com munity. Businesses have con tributed by providing food on the set as well as discounts. A major contribution will be made by the Chambers Media Center, which will donate its sound stage for in door scenes. “We basically get to film in a world class sound stage,” Lawler said. “This is helpful because want to spend our money for things that will be seen on scene instead of putting it into dough nuts on the set.” GRANITA Flavored or Coffee *1*50 *2.00 12 oz. ► reg. 2.00 16 oz. ► reg. 2.50 Grahita Special Only At The Bun * EMU Grow® Floor ORA Nutritional Supplement Beveragi 89< 20 oz. * reg. 1.19 Ora Special Only At Erb Essentials Store ► EMU Ground Floor dead and finals week specials ITALIAN SODA *1.00..
