Some 1,300 mourners packed the invitation-only service Mon day. Among them were pro wrestlers Hulk Hogan, Road Dogg, Gorilla Monsoon, Paul Bearer, Sgt. In the first sign of troop move ment since reports of a planned withdrawal were confirmed Thursday, troops headed east with tanks, armored personnel carriers, cranes and other equip ment. They appeared to be dis mantling the base, which had served as the SLA headquarters for the Jezzine area. The militiamen fired machine guns and tracer bullets ahead of them, combing the hills above the withdrawal route in standard evacuation procedure. Earlier in Marjayoun, the main town in the Israeli-occupied zone to the south, SLA commander An toine Lahd said he was withdraw ing from Jezzine “since the situa tion ... could no longer endure more slow deaths.” He said the pullout from Jezzine will be over by mid-June. “This stance presents an end to the [SLA’s] human presence. What remains is the logistical one,” said Edmond Rizk, a former Cabinet member and former member of Par liament in Jezzine, where the peace time population of 25,000 has dwindled to less than 5,000. Guerrilla attacks led by the Hezbollah group have hurt the SLA in Jezzine. A total of 155 mili tiamen and 65 civilians have died in the area. Coastal communities propose salmon goals PRINCE RUPERT, British Co lumbia — The Coastal Communi ties Network has sent the federal Fisheries minister a letter outlin ing several key points to consider while negotiating the Pacific Salmon Treaty. The network, which represents 30 communities, put forth a 10 point proposal with three main principles. The group wants no conserva tion double standard, a reduction in U.S. interceptions of salmon and compensation for past over fishing by Americans, said direc tor Paddy Greene, a Prince Rupert city councilor. Greene said Fisheries Minister David Anderson must recognize that conservation must come be fore any agreement, and then the two sides can decide who gets how many fish. Anderson has said he’s a very strong proponent for conserva tion, but Greene isn’t convinced of the minister’s sincerity. According to Greene, the Alaskans have been making Cana dian conservation efforts on coho useless because they continue to catch the same fish British Colum bia fishermen let pass through their nets. “The coho catch in Alaska is as tronomical on our stocks,” he said. “Alaska is really the bad buy up here.” Greene said he is worried about the way Anderson is handling the talks for an agreement on how to di vide salmon stocks in the Pacific. “In this letter we are trying to be helpful,” he said. — The Associated Press 1225 ALDER 345-2434 Not valid with any other discounts or coupons.
