Arriaga Continued from Page 7A a team-leading 19 wins — each of which he has announced to his teammates with a heartfelt shout of “Go Ducks!” Those 19 victories put him into Oregon’s all-time top-10. And his next win will be the 45th of his career, moving him into Oregon’s top-10 in that cate gory. “At the beginning I wasn’t aware of the records,” Arriaga said. “But with the schedule we play, to have more than 18 wins in a season is tough.” Arriaga has earned almost all of those wins in the No. 6 posi tion of the Ducks’ lineup, where he may possibly be the toughest player in the nation, Russell said. “In every school we played this year — including UCLA and Stanford, who where No. 1 at the time — we felt like we could win at No. 6 with him in the lineup,” Russell said. “And that created a feeling that we can win against anyone.” Although Arriaga lost his sin gles matches against Stanford and UCLA, those defeats were two of only four this spring. “He totally deserves” his suc cess, Navarro said. “Probably more than anyone.” Arriaga is not only on top of his game on the court. His hard work has paid off in the class room as well. Arriaga credits Footnotes for his academic survival during his freshman year, but he now holds a 3.7 grade point average and will soon graduate with honors in geology with a minor in busi ness. “There’s this quote I like,” Ar riaga said. “’The harder you work, the luckier you get.’” But it isn’t luck that deserves the credit for Arriaga’s achieve ments. Rather, especially when he’s with racket in hand, it’s Arriaga’s diligence and intellect that have enabled him to develop such a successful style of play. Growing up in Toluca,, the highest city in Mexico at 10,000 feet, Arriaga dealt with thf alti tude by developing a game that was based more on strategy than strength. But since being a Duck, Arriaga has added a touch of power to his arsenal, as well. “He’s found a way to blend his craftiness and his acquired phys ical strength to be successful,” Russell said. “He’s not just fin ishing points with his finesse and his touch, but he’s also able to put an exclamation point on them.” Arriaga’s methods for im provement haven’t been lost on his teammates. “He’s such a hard worker,” ju nior Joaquin Hamdan said, “so he always finds a way to win. He has the best touch, the best volley and the best hands on the team, and I’ve learned a lot from him. Miguel has showed me about maturity.” Within the next four years, Ar riaga promises, the Ducks will be consistently ranked in the top 20. If it happens, his “Go Ducks” mentality will have played a sig nificant role in the program’s de velopment. “There’s nothing greater as a coach then to hear him finish his match and yell out ‘Go Ducks!”’ Russell said. “That in itself is something that is part of our process, having that passion, wanting to win so badly for your university. “It’s been wonderful.” Sports Briefs Cheuvront quits team because of migraines Aaron Cheuvront, a senior from Arvada, Colo., who started at line backer last season, informed Ducks head coach Mike Bellotti on Monday that he will no longer play football because of recurring migraine headaches that made it nearly impossible for him to play. Following knee injuries to de fensive tackle Zach Freiter and P"' — comerback Rashad Bauman, Cheuvront is the third defensive starter to be lost so far this spring. Men’s basketball inks Chicago J-C transfer The Oregon men’s basketball team signed Bryan Bracey, a 6 foot-7, 210-pound forward from Chicago, to a letter of intent Tues day, head coach Ernie Kent an nounced.
