According to Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly, hosting the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament is not necessarily much of an advantage. The biggest headache Fennelly said he has is attempting to keep his fourth-seed Cyclones (22-7) focused on the task at hand — namely, Friday night’s first-round matchup with 13th-seeded Santa Clara (22-6) -— amid a blizzard of both snow and local attention in Ames, Iowa. “There are a lot of demands on our players’ time that the other teams don’t have," Fennelly said. “The biggest job my staff and I face leading up to the game is making sure that those things don’t cause too much of a distraction.” However, once the games be gin, Fennelly hopes to take full advantage of playing in the 14,044-seat Hilton Coliseum, where Iowa State was 13-0 this season Despite hosting the first two rounds last season — Oregon was among the four teams in Ames then, as well — the Cyclones lost to Rutgers, 62-61, in the second round. Veteran starters Monica Huel man, Megan Taylor and Stacy Frese and reserve guard Erica Haugen receive the rest of the Cy clones’ significant playing time. Guards Frese and Taylor score the bulk of Iowa State’s points and both were All-Big 12 selec tions. Frese, a 5-8 junior, scores near ly 17 points per game, boosted by a team-high 79 threes.
