Terry Continued from Page 7 gian is one just recently em braced by Terry, who for the last three seasons has been a key bench player for perennial na tional contender Arizona. “When I used to come off the bench, I’d come into the game and do whatever was needed, whether it was scoring, or de fense or contributing steals," Ter ry says. “It was just one thing that I had to do, to sacrifice that for the team. I think if anyone else had been put in that position, it probably would not have worked out as well, but I credit my smart mentality, being a team player, that really helps.” While his mental fortitude surely helped, the roadblock im peding Terry’s progression into the Wildcats’ starting lineup was clear — starting at small forward was third-team All-American Michael Dickerson. At off-guard was All-American Miles Simon. And at point guard was Mike Bibby, the 1998 Pac-10 player of the year and the second pick in the NBA Draft after his own All American campaign. This left little room for Terry, known mostly for his defensive abilities and not his propensity for scoring. But when Arizona found itself down by one point to No. 12 New Mexico last week end, Terry was the guy who hit the layup for the lead with 4.8 seconds left, although the Lobos would eventually win on their last possession. “It’s a great feeling,” Terry says of being entrusted with the ball in such a tight situation. “I feel like I’m in control with the ball in my hands at that time. I love that. I like the ball to be in my hands, when I get to dictate whatever is going to happen.” Earlier this season, Terry was named one of 30 candidates for the John R. Bibby finished third in the bal loting last year after being named the Pac-lO’s freshman of the year his first season. Terry came into this season without any such lau rels, but he still garnered men tion from the selection commit tee. “It surprised me, because last year we had the three all-Ameri cans,” Terry says. “I thought I may be overlooked. But I guess they gave me my just due in that 1 paid my dues. I came off the bench, so they expected me to have great things happen this year.” That attitude may sound famil iar to fans of Pac-10 basketball, and especially those with knowl edge of its rich heritage at point guard. Terry was and is one such fan, and he readily pinpoints the source of his cool confidence. “Gary Payton and his whole attitude,” Terry says. “I watched him when he was in college at Oregon State, and his whole atti tude was ‘Me against the world, forget everything.’ I’m going to come out here and play as hard as I can, and things will happen. I got my mentality from him.” Which brings us back to the socks, which Terry has been wearing since high school. “I didn’t know how much the socks really meant until after last year’s first-round game.” Terry says of the Wildcats’ 99-60 win over Nicholls State in the NCAA Tournament. "We won the game, but I didn’t score any points. I didn’t hit one basket, and that was the only game I didn’t wear those socks in my whole career.” So you can surely expect to see the socks tonight at McArthur Court. And if things go as the ever-confident Terry thinks they will come this March, you will see the socks leading Arizona to a second straight NCAA regional title game and possibly beyond. Brand New!
