Keldi Kcwkins cm K-2: Mixed Intuitions American high-altitude alpinist Heidi Howkins will present "Mixed Intuitions," a slide \ on show covering her recent climbs, including an attempt of K-2 in 1998 and her successful ”\ A summit of Gasherbrum II in 1997. Heidi is one of only a handful of women in the world who is currently climbing 8,000-meter peaks without high-altitude porters or supple mentary oxygen. She hos also launched "The SupPorters Project," to solicit contributions and financial support for the local porters hired by expeditions. Her goal with the project is to enable expeditions to provide the porters with adequate equipment. The slide show is sponsored by McKenzie Outfitters and Mountain Hardwear, manufacturer of the mountaineering tents, sleeping bags and clothing which Heidi uses when climbing. The Outdoor Program, with the help of Oregon River Sports, has reserved pool space at Gerlinger Pool on the U of 0 Campus for five skill builder sessions. An O.P. staffer will be on hand to offer informal tips, but instruction is not provided. Hone those skills and let's get on the river! Small pool means space will fill fast. Skiers and climbers literally can trigger their own destiny by venturing onto 7A unstable slopes. Attending this evening clinic by avalanche expert Jim Blnachard, Director of the UO Outdoor Pursuits Program, will raise your awareness and understanding of avalanche hazards. The slide show presentation will include a discussion of avalanche types, hazard estimation, route selection, rescue techniques and equipment. Free! Thursday, 7:30 pm: 100 Willamette Hall intretiucticm to GFS The Global Positioning System (GPS), can be a useful navigation and safety tool for 7$ backcountry travelers. This workshop will cover the basics of how these units work, identify the conditions they are and are not useful in, and how to use GPS with maps and charts for navigation. While the clinic will feature the Garmin GPS system, the information is easily transferred to other makes. Garmin GPS units are available for check-out through the Allard and Casey Memorial Safety Library. See the facing page for more information on the library. Free! Thursday, 7:30 pm: EMU Outdoor Program Room Arctic Kayak Expedition Vdo On July 4th, 1998, Jason and Ryan Tinsley left civilization behind, cutting themselves off from outside communication and support, and entered a world where success is based on the ability to adapt to any situation. In one of the most dramatic North American expeditions accomplished in years, Ryan and Jason faced Arctic wilderness situations, starvation, solitude, fatigue, and bears! Join them for a slide show and lecture documenting their journey as they navigated flatwater, whitewater, the ocean and a 200 mile upstream drag and portage. Free! Thursday, 7:30 pm: 100 Willamette Hall Forest Service Trailheati Fees Debate . Lost year, the Willamette National Forest, along with several other forests, abruptly V introduced a new revenue program colled Adventure Pass or Troilheod Fee Program. This \ 0 program is a test program authorized by Congress with possible permanent implemen tation on the horizon. The difficult issue of the merit of the fee has sharply polarized the self-propelled outdoor recreation community. Andy Stahl of AFSEE and Scott Silver from Wild Wilderness are both articulate and passionate advocates for each side of the issue and have agreed to a public debate to present their arguments. This event promises to be a very lively, interesting and in depth discussion on (railhead fees. Free! Wednesday, 7:30 pm: 100 Willamette Hall Veft Aft Veb Aft *10 Veft 95 a 0.3R Trip Initiators Clinic The most exciting element of Outdoor Program cooperative trips is the opportunity for anyone to shape their own outdoor adventure. No specialized skills ore required, just a desire to participate and get the trip process rolling. This event will cover the basic steps of initiating a common adventure trip as well as outlining the economic and spiritual benefits of being a trip volunteer, such as free equipment rental, leadership training, and opportunity for personal growth, and more. Free! Thursday, 7:30 pm: EMU Outdoor Program 0.£ Raft Trip Initiator’s Clinic Really!? Access to all that boating and transportation equipment to do river trips when and where I want!? Yep! Become an OP raft trip initiator: it's easy! The first night covers OP philosophy, liability, trip planning, and procedures. Saturday well go over equipment, barn, vehicles, safety and more, then do a short fun river trip on the McKenzie. Attendance at both sessions is required to become an initiator. If you can't go boating on Saturday, you can still come for the morning Barn session. Cost: $12 for river trip. Thursday, 7:30 pm: EMU Outdoor Program Saturday, 9:00 am: The Barn First Descent of Borneo's Livnbang Bluer Borneo, the world's third largest island, holds the oldest rain forest on earth and is home to a vast diversity of plants and animals. It is also a land of great confrontation where some of the world's last nomadic people strain for existence against encroaching natural resource extraction. In an effort to explore what may be the last remaining pristine river in Borneo, Sprague Ackley and Eric Volk set out in October, 1997 to kayak the Limbang River, from its source near the Molaysian/lndonesian border to the South Chino Sea. Come join Eric and Sprague as they take you down the river in slides and stories. Free!
