Matt Hatikimfcmerald Oregon center Jenny Mowe reaches for a rebound in the Ducks’ 63-33 blowout of Wyoming at McArthur Court on Nov. 28. Women Continued from Page 11 scoring and rebounding. Martin, a first-team All-Pac-10 performer last season, ranks third in the conference in scoring with 17 points a game and first in rebounding with 10 rebounds per contest. However, Oregon currently ranks first in the Pac-10 in both scoring defense, holding opponents to just about 53 points a game, and margin of victory, at more than 16 points per outing. Defensively, the Ducks are led by 6-foot-5 center Jenny Mowe, who has recorded 25 blocked shots in the first 13 games this season, including a season-high six in Oregon’s 63 59 victory over Stanford on Monday. Mowe, who missed nearly all of last season with tendinitis in her right knee, ranks third on the Ducks with 65 rebounds and fifth in scoring, averaging just more than seven points a game. (( The Pac-10 is so wide open this year. It's tough to say who will come out on top. We hope to be in contention right down to the very end. ** Brianne Meharry Oregon forward Oregon men face UCLA after stunning losses Both the Ducks and Bruins will be looking to rebound on Saturday By Tim Pyle Oregon Daily Emerald Losing is never fun, but losing the way the Oregon men’s basket ball team did Thursday night is heartbreaking. Luckily fortheDucks, they have the opportunity to soothe the heartache almost immediately when they battle No. 8 UCLA at McArthur Court on Saturday, starting at 5:35 p.m. and televised on the Oregon Sports Network. “We’ve got to rebound, we’ve got to win,” forward A.D. Smith said after the 85-84 loss to South ern California on Thursday night. “We have a must-win situation against UCLA.” But Oregon (9-3 overall, 1-2 Pa cific-10 Conference), which has lost two straight games for the first time this season, will not be the only team looking for redemption. The Bruins (10-3, 2-1) were shocked Thursday night in Cor vallis, where Oregon State rudely ended UCLA’s eight-game win ning streak with a 65-63 victory. Adding fuel to the fire of Satur day’s matchup is that Eugene has not been kind to the Bruins in re cent years. In four of the past five seasons, nationally ranked UCLA teams have dejectedly left Mac Court as losers. The home crowd has played a big part in all of those games, and Duck fans seem to enjoy beating the Bruins more than perhaps any other team. The first three of those four Ore gon wins were decided by 10 points or less, and the one UCLA win in Eugene in that stretch was also close, with the Bruins prevail ing 77-71 in 1996. Last season, the Ducks used 12 three-pointers and a .526 shooting percentage to successfully defend their home court in a 97-81 win over then-No. 6 UCLA. Guard Terik Brown, now a senior, scored a game-high 22 points on seven of-12 shooting. Guard Yasir Rose mond, now a junior, added 15 points and a fade-away, three point dagger in the second half. Former stars Toby Bailey, Kris Johnson and J.R. Henderson, who accounted for 46 of the Bruins’ 68 points in their two-point home win over Oregon last season, are all gone. Sophomore point guard Baron Davis now runs the show, and he is joined by returning starter Earl Watson in the backcourt. JaRon Rush, Jerome Moiso and Dan Gadzuric are expected to start in the frontcourt. The three fresh men are part of UCLA’s sterling re cruiting class from last year, which was ranked No. 1 in the country. The Ducks may appear to have their work cut out for them against the young, talented and angry Bru ins, but Oregon head coach Ernie Kent said he is confident his team will be ready following the tough loss to the Trojans. "We will bounce back,” Kent said. Sports brief DiMaggio recovering after lung surgery The Associated Press HOLLYWOOD, Fla, — Joe DiMaggio, near death a month ago, was described as being in good health Thursday in his re covery from lung cancer surgery. “He beat pneumonia,” said Morris Engelberg, the spokesman for the 84-year-old baseball great. “The infection is gone, his vital signs are good.” DiMaggio survived a series of major setbacks following his op eration on Oct. 14, including se rious lung infections. Engelberg said no decision liad been made on when the New York Yankees Hall of Famer would leave Memorial Regional Hospital. “It's day-to-day,” he said. A visit from Yankees owner George Steinbrenner last week buoyed DiMaggio, according to Engelberg, DiMaggio’s lawyer and longtime friend. “George had been calling three or four times a week, but this was the first time Joe was well enough to have him visit,” Engel berg said. "They had a couple of laughs and both enjoyed them selves.” - ©regonW^meralfc Call (541) 346-4343 or stop by Suite 300 EMU to plai t; your ad today 085 GREEK ANNOUNCEMENTS ka r<pF.
