Tricks and Treats
Ghouls, ghosts, goblins and
fright.
Black cats, tombstones and
bumps in the night.
It’s Halloween. The spooky
night for tricks, treats and all kinds
of riotous fun.
Here’s a treat for you kids, a look
at campus spooks when they were
young.
1. Dave Frohnmayer, University pres
ident:
Although Frohnmayer said he
cannot remember his costumed
days of boyhood trick and treat,
he said he was a quite a doozy for
a recent Halloween. Frohnmayer
dressed in a tuxedo, donned a
fake mustache and Groucho
Marx-style glasses. He draped a
towel over his arm and carried an
upside-down tray with cham
pagne glasses taped to its bottom.
What was this man of mystery
and disguise? A dumbwaiter.
2. Mike Bellotti, University football
coach:
This is ground control to Coach
Bellotti. Long before Bellotti’s
dreams of coaching college foot
ball and teaching quarterbacks to
launch the old pigskin, he
dreamed of launching other flying
objects. Bellotti said his favorite
childhood costume was an astro
naut — er, the “Buzz Lightyear”
look as opposed to the “Buzz
Aldrin” look.
3. Ryan Frank, editor in chief of the
Oregon Daily Emerald:
Hie top Halloween
costumes tor1998
1. Monica and Bill (note: Monica’s
dress is no longer available at the
Gap; search those vintage stores)
2. The "South Park" kids (Who
could resist?)
3. The “Scream" mask (Everyone
loves a good slasher)
4. KISS (That 70s band)
5. Duck football player with bowl
game paraphernalia (It’s still a pos
sibility)
6. Aliens (An old standard)
7. The Spice Girls (With appropriate
variations, e.g. Pregnant Spice)
8. The Backstreet Boys (A new twist
on an old theme, e.g. New Kids on
the Block)
9. Cruella DeVille (Just don’t try to
tote 101 puppies with you)
10. Eugene Police (When the riots
break out, you’ll be protected from
pepper spray)

If you’ve ever wondered why
Frank is always munching on Re
eces Pieces, look no further.
Frank’s favorite costume was as
E.T.
4. Tim Gleason, dean of the School of
Journalism and Communication:
Arrrgh, you journalism majors!
Finish your information gathering
projects and swab the deck! Glea
son said his fondest Halloween
costume memory was when he
dressed up as a sailor.
5). Geneva Wortman, ASUO presi
dent:
She was once a little green slab
of clay. Wortman has a trio of past
costume favorites. She has
dressed as Gumby, the Tooth
Fairy and the Toxic Avenger.
6. Morgan Cowling, ASUO vice presi
dent:
Cowling said it’s a tossup be
tween two costume favorites. She
once wore a giant, fuzzy and flop
py-eared bunny costume. She
was also a gypsy.
7. Robert Melnick, dean of the School
of Architecture and Allied Arts:
How ’bout them Yankees? Mel
nick, a native of New York,
dressed as a New York Yankee.
He wore the pinstripes and a wool
cap to top it off.
8. Duncan McDonald, vice president
for public affairs and development:
He is a long-time Cleveland In
dians fan, but had no comment.
Maybe next year.
9. Renard Strickland, dean of the
School of Law:
Who ever said that lawyer
types are blood-suckers? Strick
land’s favorite Halloween was
when he dressed up as Dracula.
10. Frog, street vendor:
It’s a nun. It’s a joint. It’s a turd.
No, it’s not Superman. It’s Frog’s fa
vorite three Halloween costumes.
